Even before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the debut album of the East Berlin band DER EXPANDER DER FORTSCHRITTS was published in London. With reference to Heiner Müller’s civilization critical metaphors, the EXPANDER brought experimental chansons and radio plays to the stages of the GDR pop underground. Especially the texts of Mario Persch were about a society on the edge of their state shutdown. Almost 30 years later, the EXPANDER returns. Acting, disappearing, emerging, not for nostalgic reasons, but because there is something unfinished. The “old” material is overwritten: a concept of texts and music, with the EXPANDER and about Müller, about a 1989, 2019 beyond the state actions.
