D/B RECOMMENDED: VUCCIRIA / FILM + DISCUSSION @ ICI BERLIN / TUESDAY, 30.03.2010

Vucciria is one of the most famous open air markets in Palermo. Situatet close to the harbour in the ancient part of town, it has been supplying the people of Palermo for centuries with fish, fruits, vegetables, herbs or meat.

Over the last decades the formerly pulsating place has suffered consant decline. Due to structural urban changes trade has been stagnating, shops were closed and residents moved away, leaving whole buildings abandoned.

Today the market and its area live a rather deprived but nevertheless fascinating existence within one of old europe’s most beautiful citys. German filmmaker Markus Lenz, in cooperation with Goethe-Institute Palermo and ZMK Leipzig, presents a documentation of this highly nostalgic place.

directed by Markus Lenz / Italian with German subtitles (2009, 67 min.)
