D/B Recommended: Symphony X by Ari Benjamin Meyers performed by Redux Orchestra @ HAU2 | Saturday, 02.04.2011

Born in New York and now firmly based in Berlin the composer ARI BENJAMIN MEYERS shifts flexibly between the contexts of cultural production.

[audio:Ari Benjamin Meyers – Symphony X.mp3]He works together with leading representatives of the arts scene like Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster or Anri Sala, and also collaborates with diverse representatives of the music world like Einstürzende Neubauten, Staatskapelle Berlin and Morton Subotnik.

On 2 April Meyers will perform his most ambitious work so far with the REDUX Orchestra that he had founded, a group of musicians, consisting of 17 members. ³Symphony X² is a declaration of love to neo minimal music, a style that came into being in the late 1970ies and early 1980ies at the American East Coast.

Procedures influenced by composers such as Glenn Branca and Rhys Chatham meet elements from post punk and new music. The result is a radical formal language which Meyers describes as ³productive sabotage², concerning his work in general. Musical situations are exposed to a permanent web of construction and deconstruction, leading the audience¹s expectations astray.
