Sax man of the moment Shabaka Hutchings returns to Berlin for the fourth time in the last year for a special live concert at SO36 as part of this years XJazz festival, this time with his project Shabaka & The Ancestors.

The latest stroke of genius by the internationally successful saxophonist and composer Shabaka Hutchings, who was also part of The Heliocentrics and The Sun Ra Arkestra, takes jazz to the endless realms of South Africa. The latest project by London-born Hutchings is made up of a cross-section of young South African jazz musicians whose music reminds listeners at all times of the cultural richness and the alluring heat of Africa. With their 2016 debut album ‘Wisdom of Elders’ on Gilles Peterson’s label Brownswood Recordings, they have created an eternal jazz monument to South Africa’s cultural heritage.

Celebrated for his work with Sons of Kemet and The Comet is Coming, Shabaka Hutchings is one of the leaders of an exciting new generation of British jazz musicians whose ears are open to the music of the streets as well as the sound of jazz past, present and future. Born in London in 1984, he moved to Barbados at the age of six and stayed for ten years, during which time he began his studies of the classical clarinet.
