D/B Recommended: Polyhymnia Festival @ Maria Berlin | Friday 18th & Saturday 19th March 2011

Polyhymnia is a two day spectacle of Prog and Kraut rock including Goblin’s German premiere concert plus live performances by Von Spar, Schneider TM, Zirkon and Turzi as well as DJ sets by Tim Gane (Stereolab) and many others.

[audio:goblin – suspiria.mp3]The extensive programme also includes a public discussion featuring Hans-Joachim Irmer from Faust. All in all, an unmissable event for anyone interested in the 2011 Krautrock scene.

Goblin are an Italian progressive rock band known for their soundtracks for Dario Argento films (including Profondo Rosso (Deep Red) of 1975 and Suspiria of 1977). A reshuffle in their line-up followed, and they put out an instrumental progressive rock album Roller, before they got the chance to work with film director Dario Argento for Suspiria. The score’s nerve-jangling experimental sounds and bizarre vocals have since become legendary.

Other film soundtracks and a concept album (Il Fantastico Viaggio Del Bagarozzo Mark) followed, then the score for the European version of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (1978) (credited as “The Goblins”).

VON SPAR is an artist collective from Germany consisting of Sebastian Blume, Jan Philipp Janzen, Phillip Tielsch and Christopher Marquez. They made their critcally acclaimed entrance in the pop circuit in 2004 with their debut album.

For HyBoLT, VON SPAR draw inspiration from the Krautrock of the 1970s again but took their love of experimentation to the dance floor with a real disco happening, all refracted psychedelic colour and fluid dreams. Musically, VON SPAR has produced a brilliant piece of prog-disco, one that tells of cosmic pop science and combines Can’s spirit of discovery with the dance-floor instinct of Giorgio Moroder.

With these two fabulous headliners plus local support from the likes of SchneiderTM and a DJ set by Tim Gane (Stereolab) as well as daytime events, this two day festival is sure to be a great event and a true celebration of all things Kraut and Prog.
