Mika Vainio & Pierce Warnecke @ Feed Soundspace Berlin | Thursday, 13.03.2014

Feed presents a strong double bill this month with performances by Pierce Warnecke fresh from his appearance presenting Mem_ry Fr_gm_nts at MadeiraDig and Finn-in-Berlin, Pan Sonic’s Mika Vainio.

Mika Vainio, currently based in Berlin, was one half of the minimal electronic duo Pan Sonic from Finland, (the other half was Ilpo Väisänen). Before starting Pan Sonic in the beginning of the 90’s, Mika Vainio has played electronics and drums as part of the early Finnish industrial and noise scene in the 80’s.

His solo works, under his own name and under aliases like Ø, are known for their analogue warmth and roughness. Be it abstract drone works or minimal avant techno, Vainio is always creating unique, physical sounds. He has released on labels like editions Mego, Touch, Wavetrap and Sähkö and he has been collaborating among others with Alan Vega of Suicide, Keiji Haino, Chicks on Speed, John Duncan, Bruce Gilbert and Stephen O’Malley. Since 2009 Mika Vainio is contributing the music to Cindy van Acker’s dance pieces, “Accueil”.

A memory is a recording of senses with the mind as the medium. When a memory is recalled it is played back in our heads, but never as exact as the originally experienced moment. This makes memory a volatile storage medium, subject to transience (degradation of memory with the passing of time), whereas digital audio/video recordings are theoretically immune to this decay caused by aging. ‘Memory Fragments’ explores recordings as memories by taking samples (sound, video, found objects) of a physical space and then placing them in an imaginary process of transience that slowly erodes the digital memories until disappearance.

Pierce Warnecke is a sound and video artist currently residing in Berlin. He graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2007 and in 2013 completed his Meisterschüler studies at Universität der Kunst, Kunst und Medien. In addition to artistic works, he co-curates Emitter Micro Festival and label with Kris Limbach. He has presented his works at LEAP (Berlin), Harvestworks (NY), Luggage Store Gallery (SF), Berklee (Boston), CalArts (LA) as well as festivals like Zero1 Biennale, Transmediale, Bozart/BEAF (Brussels), MadeiraDig, Nuits Sonores, Boston Cyberarts, Visionsonic, Pixelache, Vidéoformes, SXSW Interactive and more. He has released music on Khalija, Staaltape, Gaffer Records, Attenuation Circuit, and Gruenrekorder.
