A groundbreaking collaboration by the Berlin techno legend Mark Ernestus and Senegalese musicians, a griot clan of Sabar drummers, a throng of well-known instrumentalists and a chanteuse who sings in Wolof. The result is a rousing synthesis of marimba synthesizers, repetitive drumbeats and complex rhythms.
Make no mistake, this is no sanitized music for the feel-good market… This is Ndagga!” Mark Ernestus Presents Jeri-Jeri is the spectacular collaboration between the renowned Berlin-based producer Mark Ernestus and a griot clan of Sabar drummers from Kaolack (Senegal). Mark Ernestus is the founder of the legendary Hardwax record store, which in 1989 laid the foundation for Berlin’s booming club music scene. He also produced music as one half of Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound – both projects created a seminal blueprint for dub-influenced techno the Berlin way.
Being completely hooked on West-African Mbalax with its hyper-vivid Sabar work-outs and sick, synthesized Marimbas, Ernestus travelled to Senegal early in 2011 in search of original recordings. Instead he ended up recording with some of the country’s finest musicians in Dakar – the performers who normally serve as sidemen in the bands of Youssou N’Dour and Baaba Maal. The results of these sessions have been released on the critically highly acclaimed albums “800 % Ndagga” and “Ndagga Versions” in May 2013 – now watch Jeri-Jeri explode on stage! Initially a mere studio project they have turned into a killer, percussion-driven and unique live act. With some major festivals already confirmed, this is an act to watch out for this summer: Ndagga music is no remix or electronic re-edit, but the real deal – stripped down to the rhythmic bones!
