Hobocombo at Acud / Monday, 02.11.2015

Hobocombo is Andrea Belfi at drums, percussion and voice, Rocco Marchi at guitar, synth and voice, Francesca Baccolini at double bass and voice. Hobocombo is a band dedicated to and inspired by the music of Moondog. Hobocombo’s latest album Moondog Mask is an exotic trip through medieval canons, african rhythms, call & response blues.

It brings together new arrangements of Moondog’s music, traditional Italian folk songs with the field recordings by ethnomusicologis Roberto Leydi, the songwriting of Robert Wyatt and original compositions made during a cold winter stay on the Baltic sea. All condensed in a experimental, weird and elegant pop music world.

Hobocombo began as a tribute to Moondog, playing and interpreting his music under a 21st century light which resulted in their debut album Now That It’s The Opposite, It’s Twice Upon A Time. Three years later, their second recorded voyage Moondog Mask, which once again features several compositions by our Viking Hero alongside a selection of Hobocombo’s own compositions and a “deviation” by Robert Wyatt, ‘East Timor’.

The resulting potlatch is a glorious kaleidoscopic trip around the notion of Moondog being a “fantasy writer”, running with the imaginative possibilities offered up by his music and philosophy that draws out lines of flight connecting with a strain of exotica that runs from Les Baxter, to Joe Meek, via the aforementioned Wyatt.
