D/B Recommended: Faithful! – talking about Interpretation @ Berghain Berlin | Friday, 05.10 – Friday, 12.10.2012

faithful! wants to requestion the concept of interpretation and wants to rehabilitate interpretation as a category of talking about music.

Situations, in which the differences of musical practices are openly revealed, will be created.

The focus lies on the comparison of different approaches of interpretation, shown through various ensembles and soloists performing the same work.

Other situations in which the concept of musical interpretation is palpable, are a karaoke matinee with works of contemporary music, the intuitive, score-unbound acquisition of a work, the reinterpretation of atonal chamber symphonics, style collages, transcriptions of pieces of the classical avant-garde on Keyboard, Re-Works of pop stars at a club of dead songwriters, the comparing of different dj cultures and the open form of musical graphics.

At the same time precarious aspects of musical performance are reflected, including the predicament of having to perform a work that one does not like to play. The panel discussions are devoted among other matters to music criticism – with the “quartet of critics ‘by the “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik” – , to the marketing of artists and to the tension between the musical ideas of the composers and the possibilities of the musicians.

The festival title – faithful! – traces back to an album by American guitarist and producer Todd Rundgren, who covered among others songs of the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, trying to get as close to the original version as possible.
