For its sixth edition, Berlin Confidential welcomes New York composer Judd Greenstein to Berlin for an evening dedicated to some of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music.
At the center of the program is the world premiere of And Eternity Sings Its Song, a new work written especially for this occasion by Greenstein, inspired by the paintings of Ukrainian artist Ivan Marchuk, which will be projected during the performance. The evening also features additional works by Greenstein, alongside music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw and inti figgis-vizueta, whose widely-acclaimed music works to reconcile historical aesthetics and experimental practices with trans & Indigenous futures. Both Shaw and figgis-vizueta have released music on New Amsterdam Records, the Brooklyn-based record label and artists’ service organization that Greenstein founded in 2007 with composers Sarah Kirkland Snider and William Brittelle.
A leading figure of the contemporary American music scene, Judd Greenstein is known for music that moves fluidly between classical tradition, minimalism, indie culture and rhythmic experimentation. His works have been performed by major ensembles across the world, while his artistic vision has helped shape a new generation of composers through his work as co-founder of New Amsterdam Records.
The program is brought to life by the Rothko String Quartet, violist Hiyoli Togawa, and the Berlin-based ensemble hear now berlin. Known for its commitment to contemporary repertoire and adventurous programming, the Rothko String Quartet has established itself as a dynamic voice on the international chamber music scene. Hiyoli Togawa is a versatile violist whose artistic work is characterized by curiosity, openness, and a broad engagement with contemporary creation. Founded in 2019 by American flutist Kelly Watson Woelffer, hear now berlin. is dedicated to innovative contemporary music and collaborations that connect classical music with influences from jazz, pop, minimal music, and beyond.
Taking place at Studio 1111, New York Speaks with Judd Greenstein offers a rare opportunity to experience one of America’s most influential contemporary composers in person, alongside a program that celebrates artistic curiosity, stylistic openness and the continuing evolution of chamber music. Bringing together internationally active performers and music that crosses stylistic boundaries, the evening reflects Berlin Confidential’s commitment to presenting contemporary music in direct dialogue with the artists who create it.
