You Don’t Really Know Me w/ Mobilegirl at Monarch / Wednesday, 22.06.2016

Berlin is rich with local electronic music producers and DJs. Privately though not all of them are exclusively listening to electronic music or the kind of music they make themselves. So what else is inspiring them?

Once a month Monarch Berlin invites a producer, artist or DJ to play music he/she would usually not play in a club: music that informs the roots of their styles, obscure songs they love, guilty pleasures, analogue or digital, danceable or not.

A member of label/collective Staycore’s Berlin contingent, Munich-born Bao-Tran Tran has just begun to explore the expanses of contemporary music creation, making efforts to blur the lines between club-ready material and introspective melodic work in a fashion that a less-than naïve artist could easily ignore.

Without an official release to her name yet, Mobilegirl has flexed on a number of classic R&B vocals, reworking the likes of TLC, Brandy and J-Lo into floor-focused jams with intricate rhythm works. And while Bao-Tran so far lacks the impressive back catalogue, original tracks like Ice Sheets and Philae Touchdown show a great deal of promise, representing the sort of leftfield takes on Afro-Caribbean rhythms that collective Staycore has championed since inception.

This event is presented by Digital in Berlin. Check out our Facebook page to win tickets.
