Quiana Lynell’s voice should only be written about in the plural. Classical training, gospel, zydeco and Louisiana RB, the blues, of course, jazz and jazz again are all part of the repertoire of the former winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. In addition to her career as a sought-after live performer, songwriter and session singer, she has long been active in education. When she steps on stage, however, emotion is at the forefront: “jazz collides with soul,” is how she describes her approach.
When Delfeayo Marsalis & The Uptown Jazz Orchestra give a concert, it’s jazz with three bold exclamation points. But not only that: Their repertoire, influenced by New Orleans jazz and second line, is always enriched by additional elements. This not only makes the audience want to dance, but effortlessly leaps from one decade to the next – from James Brown to Louis Armstrong or the nightly New Orleans of today. This equally tradition-conscious and contemporary approach is huge fun.
