Suff Daddy „The Gin Diaries“

„Suff“ means „drinking heavy“ in German and his favourite drinks are Pilsetten and Tanqueray. Suff Daddy grew up in Düsseldorf (the city of Kraftwerk), listening to the 90ies hip-hop-collection of his older brother. His favourite group back than were Tha Alkaholics. He caught the beatbug after he moved to Berlin a couple of years ago, inspired by Quasimoto and Jaylib. Suff Daddy started working with MySpace poster girl Kissey Asplund in 2005 and has since then laced beats for Miles Bonny, Oddisse, Fleur Earth, Retrogott, Morlock Dilemma, Flomega and many more. However, the beat daddy is really at home with his solo joints. In 2009 Suff Daddy accounted for “Suff Draft”, the second instalment of the Hi-Hat Club series. „The Gin Diaries“, Suff Daddy’s debut LP for which he worked with Miles Bonny, Jim Dunloop, Fleur Earth, Mar and Mariama, saw the light of day in early 2010 and is D/B highly recommended!

Questions

What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
Other peoples music. especially 90’s hip hop and old soul music.

How and when did you get into making music?
I started to make beats in 1999 when a friend of mine introduced me to sonic foundry acid, a sequencing program. Before that I was listening to the hip hop collection of my older brother a lot, which probably was the biggest influence for me.

What are your 5 favourite albums of all time?
marvin gaye –  i want you
jaylib – champion sound
pete jolly – seasons
d’angelo – voodoo
large professor – the lp

What do you associate with Berlin?
Cheap rents, cold winters, personal freedom, a great vibe, too many hipsters, my favorite city in Germany.

What’s your favourite place in your town?
Definitely my own flat. I like to chill at home.

If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
Maybe I would produce porn movies. or be a videogame-tester.

What was the last record you bought?
Midnight express show band – tri-fire vol. 1.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Chief chinchilla or tha alkaholiks.

What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
As a performer I guess the beat bbq 2010 was the best gig so far, everybody was really celebrating the music, kinda different to regular gigs. As a spectator… I dont know. I always hang out at the bar, so I cannot really tell.

How important is technology to your creative process?
Without my computer I wouldn’t be able to do music, so its very important. I don’t play any analog instruments. But besides that I’m not too geeky about all that. I use what I got and thats cool. I’m not too experienced when it comes to technical stuff.

Do you have siblings and how do they feel about your career?
Yes, I have an older brother and I think he’s proud of me. He would never be jealous. We are family. He knows that he is one of the reasons why I do beats and I think he likes that.
