Sophia Kennedy and Moritz Fasbender at HAU1 / Sunday, 25.2.2024

Sophia Kennedy‘s music sometimes sounds like the soundtrack to a world hanging by a thread of memories. It combines the glamour and morbid charm of retro melodies from the 1960s or 70s and yet is entirely committed to the deconstructed modernity of club music.

The songs can change the atmosphere in a split second, as the single “Orange Tic Tac” impressively demonstrates, alternating between menacing, gloomy trap beats and crooner melodies. Her second album “Monsters”, out on City Slang, is full of twists and turns and moments of beauty interspersed with paranoia. The title itself is a self-deprecating, comic commentary on being an artist trying to tame their own creations like monsters gone wild, but also an allusion to a generally threatening tension in the world. “Monsters” is pop music on the brink of ruin, but it’s not a eulogy, it’s a tear down party!

The evening will be opened by Moritz Fasbender – alias of composer Friederike Bernhardt. Her instrumental music moves with atmospheric density using analog electronics and prepared piano between sketchy miniatures, dark, gloomy film noir scores and epic expanses.
