The trio Sea Moya is a new psychedelic beat outfit, emerging from in between the shipping containers of a German Harbour. Passing their ideas through a chaotic system of wires, various instruments, effect pedals and analog recording gear into the computer, where it all gets mangled, sliced up and put back together again, it still sounds human, putting all of that together, they formulate the band ’s self produced DIY sound.

What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
To pinpoint one source of inspiration is quite hard, it’s more about the combination of everything surrounding you. Each relationship, experience or movement in any kind can pull the trigger to get you in that creative flow. In July we packed some gear in a van and drove up the baltic sea coast to Estonia and wrote music on that trip. This was such and outstand ing experience for us that we actually came back with a whole bunch of new songs and ideas. The nature and the situation to be right there whilst making music was extraordinary.
How and when did you get into making music?
Music has been playing a big role in our lives for a long time. We all had our first band s as teenagers and tried out some different styles. To look back where we musically came from and where we are now is quite amusing!

As we’re three guys with quite a diverse taste it’s not that easy but I think we can agree on these five records:

What do you associate with Berlin?
Diverse city, shows are always like family meetings, good (really good) food, everything’s cheap except rents in Kreuzberg/Neukölln, traffic, weird and crazy people. There is always something happening where you could go, no matter what time it is.
What’s your favorite place in your town?
Actually it’s a small turkish take-away called Uzun Taşfırını which has the best Pide we ever tried anywhere. When rehearsing or producing we go there at least every second day.
If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
At first we’d probably be deadly bored and then we’d become sailing scientists who build their own boat, do photography and cook.
What was the last record you bought?
The first and self-titled record by Unknown Mortal Orchestra, great one. Got it after their show in Cologne.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Hm, why not chill, skate and work with Chaz Bundick aka Toro y Moi – that’d be sick!
What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
We didn’t play that much shows yet, but by now it’s probably been a show couple of weeks ago in a pretty arty-creative-warehouse down in South Germany. They had the best fancyveganfood-catering and our gig went super smooth and the crowd was awesome. Another great one was our UK debut in London just some days ago!
How important is technology to your creative process?
Most of the times the musical opportunities given by technology bring us great input and creative potential: all the sounds and noises we sometimes rand omly come up with wouldn’t be the same without technology we have our days. When it comes to get the ideas together and record them, it again is quite easy to work out a first draft of a track having your laptop and a minimalistic studio with you as we did on our Baltic states trip. On the other hand our creative process is often initiated by simple ideas written on a upright piano or acoustic guitar combined with some vocals, then we’re kinda back to the roots.
Do you have siblings and how do they feel about your career?
We do have siblings, most of them are in other professions than music, part of them do music as a hobby and some are musicians as well. So naturally their feelings do vary. All in all they’re very supportive even though some of them might not choose the same way. It’s always great fun to invite them to our shows and have them with us.
