Potsa Lotsa XL & Youjin Sung “Gaya” at House of Music / Saturday, 13.5.2023

Silke Eberhard has been one of the most important figures in the progressive Berlin jazz scene for many years. In 2020 she received the Berlin Jazz Prize for the consistent implementation of her musical visions, and the saxophonist, clarinetist and composer also enjoys great international recognition.

One of Eberhard’s most important projects is the band “Potsa Lotsa XL“. In his reduced line-up “Potsa Lotsa” she has already recorded the complete works of the free jazz pioneer Eric Dolphy, now she has brought in the Korean Youjin Sung to play the Korean zither gayageum for her current album with the full line-up as a tentett. Jazz projects with folk musicians often suffer from the fact that the jazz musicians play their usual “boots” and the unfamiliar sound of the Asian or African instrument only gives the whole thing an exotic garnish.

Silke Eberhard counteracted this danger by learning to play the gayageum herself and studying Korean music intensively before composing the suite “Gaya”. This is how an original mixture of jazz and Korean tradition came about, in which the gayageum interlocked harmoniously with the ensemble and both sides approached each other musically without questioning their own identity.
