Nkisi (live), Oli XL (DJ) at Roter Salon / Friday, 11.05.2018

Nkisi is the alias of Melika Ngombe Kolongo, an artist raised in Belgium and now living in London. As co-founder of NON Worldwide, whose raison d’être is described as “a collective of African artists and of the diaspora, using sound as their primary media, to articulate the visible and invisible structures that create binaries in society, and in turn distribute power”, Nkisi’s ethos and music is imbued with a certain punk sensibility along with a political push back against conformity. Her productions draw from a wide range of influences, with heavily layered percussion and drums, forming a fast paced and exhilarating experience in the dance.

Nkisi will be joined by Oli XL, a producer, visual artist and the head of stockholm-based label W-I, who has explored new ways to release physical music with the Relic-project – scavenging parts from cheap consumer electronics and planting them in 3d-printed shapes, he released the EP “Location” by Celyn June as sculptures that second as music players. See here. His own music appeared on PAN’s ambient compilation “Mono no Aware” and in early 2018 on Posh Isolation’s compilation “I Could Go Anywhere But Again I Go With You”.
