Nils Frahm works as an accomplished composer and producer from his Berlin-based Durton Studio. For a musician this early in his career, Frahm displays an incredibly developed sense of control and restraint in his work, catching the ear of many fans. As the recognition continues to grow for his previous solo piano works ‘Wintermusik’ (2009) and ‘The Bells’ (2009), 2011 saw the release of his critically acclaimed record ‘Felt’. The album was followed by the solo synthesiser EP ‘Juno’ and ‘Screws’ (2012) – a birthday gift to his fans he recorded while recovering from a thumb injury. Nils released his follow up to Juno titled ‘Juno Reworked’ (2013) with guest reworks by Luke Abbott and Clark. Now Nils returns with his new album ‘Spaces’ expressing Frahm’s love for experimentation and answering the call from his fans for a record that truly reflects what they have witnessed during his concerts.

Questions
What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
The life I live and the experiences I make are the biggest inspiration for my music. Also each instrument with all its imperfections inspires the performance.
How and when did you get into making music?
I had instruments at home and I jammed out with my father every night, so I got in contact pretty early with music. At 8 I had my first piano lessons.
What are your 5 favourite albums of all time?
I cant answer that, because it would make me feel bad to not include all the other great albums I have in mind. So sorry but I have to leave that out. :)
What do you associate with Berlin?
The possibility to do whatever you want, whenever you want.
What’s your favourite place in your town?
The plötzensee. I go swim there every summer and it is right next door to where I live.
If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
I would try to become a pilot for hot airballoons.
What was the last record you bought?
An old jazz record from the 60ies. The saxophone player is called Johnny Hodges. I love his music.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Mark Hollis.
What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
I love playing in brussels. All the shows I had there were too good to be true.
How important is technology to your creative process?
I love tape machines and mic preamps from the 50ies. Also old ribbon mics and other historical gear. I think I could imagine a life without computers, but as long everyone has one I need to have one too. But I still manage to survive without an iphone.
Do you have siblings and how do they feel about your career?
I love my brother and I am proud of him and so is he. It would be horrible if he wouldn’t be happy about all the good developments in my life.
