Lalume

Lalume are a Berlin based Norwegian/Australian electro-pop duo formed in 2017 whilst studying electronic music production at university in Berlin. Auri comes from a family of Italian musicians, her Grandfather Eros Sciorilli was a renowned orchestral composer and her father was a 70’s singer-songwriter signed to Warner Brothers. She moved to Berlin from Paris where she was previously singing in a jazz band and studying classical voice with the vague idea to one day become an opera singer.

Ola moved to Berlin from Norway, also coming from a family of producers he was fortunate to be gifted his fathers production gear and vintage synthesisers and the band were able to set up a fully equipped studio at the Funkhaus when the owner took an interest in the the band and offered them a space. With almost no budget the duo were able to gather a team of creatives to work with them on their project: “LALUME is a project built from love, everyone involved has generously given their skills and time to help us grow and we hope to be able to pay them back one day.”

QUESTIONS:

1. What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
Our actual lives. We are both embarrassingly sensitive and rather sentimental creatures.

2. How and when did you get into m(king music?
I was singing before I could speak. I used to write songs and draw dots over the words to indicate pitch. Ola has been m(king beats and playing music most of his life. We were both born into musical families which helps I think.

3. What are 5 of your favourite albums of all time?
Blue by Joni Mitchell
Dummy by Portishead
channel ORANGE by Frank Ocean
Nordic Flora series pt. 3 by Varg
Too Many Voices by Andy Stott

4. What do you associate with Berlin?
Freedom. Tolerance. Hedonism. Creativity.

5. What’s your favourite place in your town?
The Funkhaus is pretty special. Itʼs where we spend most of our time either working in our studio or in the living room which is a beautiful newly opened club/lounge where we are
residents for pre-show concerts.

6. If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
What kind of world would that be? I canʼt imagine living in a world without music.

7. What was the last record/music you bought?
Klara Lewis – Msuic EP

8. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
We really love Sgrow they are a Norwegian duo. We got to meet them at the ableton loop festival last year.. they are totally amazing.

9. What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
We really loved playing the opening of the living room in saal 4 of funkhaus last week. The acoustics are perfect and itʼs such a majestic space , itʼs so nice for a vocalist to hear your voice carried by a space.

10. How important is technology to your creative process?
Extremely important now that we are making electronic music but both of us come from acoustic backgrounds. Ola plays the trombone and I used to sing in a jazz quintet

11. Do you have siblings and how do they feel about your career/art?
We are both only children. Ola has some baby twin step siblings now but they have not yet formed an opinion of LALUME although we were asked to play at their first birthday party :)
