Kontraklang w/ PHØNIX16 & KWARTLUDIUM at Heimathafen Neukölln / Tuesday, 31.10.2017

The Berlin-based ensemble PHØNIX16, founded in 2012, consists exclusively of vocal soloists. That the ensemble members consider themselves equal parts soloists and members of a collective has a decisive influence on the artistic work and the sound of the group. PHØNIX16 specializes in developing and performing experimental contemporary music by living composers.

The Polish Ensemble KWARTLUDIUM, founded in 2012 by graduates of Polish conservatories, performs primarily pieces by young Polish composers in concerts and festivals throughout Europe. The center of their work is improvised music, which is reflected in their repertoire of graphic and intuitive compositions, as well as other exceptional contemporary works.

Together PHØNIX16 & KWARTLUDIUM have developed the project Erschrecken kannste selber! as a multimedia concert. Two of the most outstanding young composers from the Polish scene Jagoda Szmytka and Dariusz Przybylski, interpret and manipulate texts, images, and sound together with the ensembles into interdisciplinary compositions. They channel the information overload of everyday life and transform it into something new. Erschrecken kannste selber! thus brings together contrary forms of musical expression, from complex and mellifluous to bizarre and plaintive.

The composition EXPLOSION/DESCRIPTION by Dariusz Przybylski is based on Heiner Müllers text Bildbeschreibung. Müller‘s text describes a thoughtworld in which themes of death, destructions, gender war, and renewal endlessly repeat. The resulting images are questioned and discarded, all existing at the same time. This medial simultaneity of overlapping paradoxical messages becomes the basis of the composition and the visual realization. Video sequences of current, historical, and invented messages are interwoven in permanent movement and transformation.

Together with PHØNIX16, KWARTLUDIUM & S.A.F.T. Jagoda Szmytka offers in her piece In between this all a hybrid between concert and happening. Her musical realization of “reality laboratories” form the basis of minutely planned processes. The apparent coincidences of performance, tape, and music are musically exactly planned and organized through the score. Her “intertextual music” for the “ears, eyes, and spirit” connects mixed media, transmedia, and genre-crossing formats. Her compositions are mixtures of text, images, and sound that figure complex structures that reference high and pop culture, philosophy, and reality.
