Jungstötter at Volksbühne / Friday, 5.5.2023

Reviews on Jungstötter albums are often peppered with shallow metaphors trying to capture the sound by contrasting it with other bands. Which is probably due to its uniqueness and the idiosyncratic relationship between lyrics and sound universes. The texts negotiate intricate emotions which analogies are incapable of recreating. The new album One Star is testament to this evolution that defies any categorisation of Fabian Altstötter aka Jungstötter as a singer-songwriter.

Forgoing ready-made sounds and music, the singer, composer and sound architect has reached the next level of self-confidence and complexity. An open approach to human existence is part of the deal – “Every ache in me is air” is a line from the album’s first single release Air referencing Adam Harper’s description in Infinite Music: Music, like the human experience in general, is infinite and fluid.

FRANKIE (Franziska Aigner) creates work at the intersection of music, philosophy and performance. In 2021, her debut album STYX was released on Shadow World/Bedroom Community. She has been performing internationally ever since. On 5 May she will perform in team with Agnese Menguzzato. FRANKIE has worked with artist Anne Imhof, including writing and recording the score for FAUST, released as an LP on PAN in 2019. In the same year, she joined Holly Herndon’s vocal ensemble.

Hendrik Otremba is a writer, visual artist, and singer with the band Messer. He also teaches creative writing and works as freelance curator and music journalist. His paintings are released on album covers and in various magazines. His debut novel Über uns der Schaum, published in 2017, was followed by a second novel Kachelbad’s Erbe in 2019 published by Hoffmann und Campe. As part of the band Messer, he has released four albums to date, most recently No Future Days in 2020.
