Heidrun Schramm

When you think of a media artist and composer, you might not think of Heidrun Schramm but you should. Her desk is littered with cables, gear, laptop and avid curiosity that combines into an expression. An expression worth looking and listening to. Heidrun Schramm is a Berlin-based media artist and composer, who works in the fields of electroacoustic music, installation and video. Besides that she is involved in theater projects. She studied sound art / acoustic communication at University of Arts in Berlin. After several collaborations (Audiotubbies with Jetzmann/Katja Rajewski, Duo Parallel with Y-TON-G) she initiated her ongoing project Sonata Rec, which is focused on solo performances.

Heidrun has contributed to sound design for a number of documentaries and also a collection of visual pieces. She is now a part of the Heroines of Sound Festival, marking a path to recognition for her abilities to alter the realities of sounds and make it her own.

What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
everyday sounds, noise, accident, mistakes, surprises, experiments, by making music, historic electro acoustic music, fine arts, fluxus, dada

How and when did you get into making music?
age of 7 normal instrumental training in recorder and piano, which was quite unimportant part for my musical developement. It started some years later with a tape recorder and became more serious in the 90ies after buying a mini disc recorder and OKM stereo microphones: I recorded a lot of everyday sound tracks, collect field recordings as a basic material for my first electoacoustic composition.

a lot of art, architecture, work …

What’s your favourite place in your town?
our garden and wide places like Tempelhofer Feld

If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
Everything we do is Music (John Cage)
so it depends on the definition of music – maybe the same like now, or otherwise paintings(?)

What was the last record you bought?
CD of Pit Noack ‎– Mechanical Music

Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I dont know ..

What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
as performer: duo with Nicolas Wiese at Haus am Lützplatz in March 2012
as spectator: Blurt at Privatklub Berlin in December 2013

How important is technology to your creative process?
it’s important, for composing, and the material for the composition – especially because my composition are based on recordings, but the recordings don’t need other technologies. If I work analog, I would find new ways to realise special sound imaginations

Do you have siblings and how do they feel about your career?
Yes, and I really don’t know, what they feel about – hopefully neutral, maybe positive
