Digital in Berlin’s gig-of-the-year Forma return to Berlin this October on the heels of their stunning new record “Semblance” on Kranky for a special live concert at Arkaoda in Neukölln.
Formed in 2010 by Mark Dwinell in Brooklyn, FORMA’s combustible mixture of lush synth explorations and frenetic rhythm has captivated the margins of the international synth scene since their 2011 self-titled debut on John Elliott’s influential Spectrum Spools label. Following 2012’s darker OFF/ON, the trio released their Cool Haptics EP on The Bunker New York in 2014, a study in extended ambient techno.
Physicalist, their debut on Kranky, features new member and multi-instrumentalist John Also Bennett, and is the first to feature acoustic instrumentation. The album shows a lineage emerging from American composers like Harold Budd and Terry Riley, rather than doubling down on the Krautrock inspired journeys the group is known for. FORMA’s celebrated live performances — often extended journeys veering from the ecstatic to the foreboding — draw ambient, techno, and synth disciples into their realm.
