Fear of Men has recently released “Tephra” as a digital single. It’s the fourth, if you’re counting, from their devastatingly beautiful, debut album “Loom.” 2014 has been a busy year for the Brighton based band . April saw the release of their debut album, which has been described as “A graceful exhibition of light melody over dark mood.” From April through June, Fear of Men traversed several continents in support of the release and in support of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. With one national US tour and a European tour covering seven countries now under their belt, Fear of Men has returned this fall as a headlining act. Catch them, including guitarist Daniel Falvey (interviewed below), at Berlin’s own Schokoladen on Oct. 8th, 2014.
Questions
What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
Probably with the band , each other. Getting in a room and working on music together is very inspiring for each of us I think.
How and when did you get into making music?
I’ve been making music in groups since I was about 12, though when I was younger I used to make up little songs for my brother and sister and pretend they were pop songs that had just hit the charts so I guess I’ve always been interested in making music!

What do you associate with Berlin?
I love Museum Island , it’s great everything is so close together so you can fit a lot in to a day. I’m looking forward to going back there.
What’s your favourite place in your town?
Brighton has the sea, and it’s always nice to hang out there, whatever the weather or time of day.
If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
I would probably write.
What was the last record you bought?
Ty Segall’s ‘Sleeper’ album on vinyl. I’ve had to temporarily stop buying records as I’m on tour so much I don’t really have a home or anywhere to store records.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Jeff Mangum.
What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
Probably our favourite show recently was our London show on this tour. We were so happy to see that so many people had paid to come to see us. It was one of those moments where we turned to each other and said ‘we’re a real band ‘! The atmosphere was great and it felt like a real event.
How important is technology to your creative process?
Technology isn’t as important to us as it is to some other band s, but at the same time we’re not afraid of it. We like to maintain a human feel to what we do, because it feels right for our music, so we tend to use analogue rather than digital instruments but we’re open to exploring using technology in the future if it fits.
Do you have siblings and how do they feel about your career?
Yes, a brother and a sister, and they are very supportive. My brother fancies himself to be a bit of a critic though so is always suggesting ways we can improve!
