Indie-rock trio Derde Verde crafts colorful, chameleon-like song structures sprinkled with noise, analog electronics, melodic guitar lines and rhythmic twists. The L.A. based band named themselves after Val Verde, a rural valley town of coyotes, rolling hills, and big sky, an hour north of the city. With a range of influences from shoe gaze, to krautrock, to indie electronica, the band ’s music has been described as “instantly engrossing, buoyed by excellent arrangements and impressive vocal harmonies… Derde Verde may be the closest thing Los Angeles has to its own Radiohead right now” — Tom Child (LA Record). Derde Verde has toured the West Coast, and played festival dates in Europe. Their compelling and spontaneous live shows earned them slots in 2012 opening for iconic krautrock pioneers Faust, P-Funk/Talking Heads keyboardist Bernie Worrell and San Pedro punk legend Mike Watt.

What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
Communicating things that can’t be expressed in words alone. Playing music transports you somewhere else. You get sucked into the story of it, or the feeling of it. I think the audience feels that too.
How and when did you get into making music?
We were all the type of kids who were obsessed with music, took classes, and ended up meeting each other in music school years later. We can’t remember a time that we were’t making music. We were born into it, and luckily have found each other.

What do you associate with Berlin?
Night as busy as day, infinite streets, strangers that quickly become friends. Freedom to be who you are. We’ve had some cool things happen in parks there.
What’s your favourite place in your town?
The mountains nearby, the old Largo, Echo Lake, and the Griffith Park Observatory.
If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
That kind of world is impossible because music is built into the human body and the natural land scape. When you’re born you hear the heartbeat of your mother, and the Earth is never silent.

What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
We opened for Faust in 2012 in L.A. They had a chainsaw, a cement mixer, and four Marshall stacks on stage. It was a very wild performance that we won’t forget.
How important is technology to your creative process?
We’re not dependent on technology, but we use it as tool. Exploring new sounds and textures is something we like to pursue. Whether with technology or not, we like to build songs intuitively.
Do you have siblings and how do they feel about your career?
One of our siblings has been our recording and mixing engineer for all of our albums. As for the rest, we haven’t heard any complaints.
