Danse Macabre at Zwingli-Kirche / Tuesday, 3.10.2023

The project Danse Macabre is an avant-garde reflection of the medieval dance of death motif, whose function is to recall that all people are affected by death and therefore equal before it: Et in Arcadia ego!

The new project of composer, process artist and zeitkratzer drummer Maurice de Martin in cooperation with the renowned Swiss art performer Saskia Edens aims here to close an elementary mental gap left open by the painters of the medieval frescoes: the inclusion of the animal kingdom in the dance.

Thus, in a performative way, this expansive work also recalls the sensitive, complex, precarious, brutal, always fatefully connected relationship between human and animal, civilization and nature. Experimental, improvised music as an art form of the ephemeral and art performance as a discipline of the immediate enter into an unusual symbiosis with emotional and humorously self-mocking early music on the Vanitas motif from Baroque Königsberg.

The transdisciplinary ensemble, specially assembled for this work, will play the nave of the Zwingli-Kirche in Berlin-Friedrichshain in the evening hours of the third of October 2023.
