“African Beats & Pieces” is a monthly event series at Monarch Berlin dedicated to the music of Africa and its diaspora.
With a special focus on contemporary and lesser-known artists, we strive to showcase the diversity of sounds and songs the continent has to offer, doing so through theme-specific parties involving passionate diggers & DJs.
★ Feast From The East ★ will focus on the amazing wealth of music from Eastern African countries, a rich repertoire too often ignored or under-appreciated, not only on the continent but in the rest of the world.
After a live show by talented Berlin-based performer with Ethiopian roots ★ Martha Teferra Mekonnen ★, a team of passionate DJs (Flee Project & DJ Mixanthrope) will explore and celebrate the many songs, sounds and styles originating from Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, Somalia, South Sudan and Tanzania.
We invite you to come discover the million gorgeous tracks from the huge area : from rural Pop to urban Folk (& the other way around !), from subversive Hip-Hop anthems to transe-inducing polyrhythmic Electro tracks, from alternative niche hits navigating the pentatonic scale to mainstream ear-candies drenched in Auto-Tune, from the obscure depths of YouTube to rare crate-diggers’ gems, from pulsating 5/8 downbeats to four-to-the-floors, from crappy mp3s to mint vinyls !
A special attention will be given to the outstanding output of East Africa-based labels, collectives & networks such as Nyege Tapes, Santuri Safari & Sauti Academy.
Martha is an artist from Ethiopia who has been living in Berlin since 2010. She plays a very special and rare genre of traditional music, the Krar – Chawatah.
This Berlin-based collective of music-lovers recently released a critically-acclaimed vinyl compilation & printed journal dedicated to Kenya’s legendary Benga music genre. Due to popular demand, they repressed this in-depth publication on April 9th, eager to further promote the fascinating story of this lesser-known
