Berlin is rich with local electronic music producers and DJs. Privately though not all of them are exclusively listening to electronic music or the kind of music they make themselves. So what else is inspiring them?
Once a month Monarch Berlin invites a producer, artist or DJ to play music he/she would usually not play in a club: music that informs the roots of their styles, obscure songs they love, guilty pleasures, analogue or digital, danceable or not.
Alongside fellow members of Berlin’s Janus collective, recently behind nights at Berghain and Corsica Studios, M.E.S.H. is known for his futurist approach to club dynamics and production.
M.E.S.H.’s music finds kinship in the uncompromising club dynamics of Rabit and Total Freedom, but really ups the darkness factor – not in a cliched, crank-the-reverb-up-to-a-hundred way, but with hellish changes of pace and sweat-soiled atmospheres.
In addition to his club experience, M.E.S.H’s work is equally well contextualized by his community of peers – he is a frequent collaborator with contemporary artist Aleksandra Domanović, has exchanged remixes with Arca and Fatima Al Qadiri, and is a formative figure in an ascendent community of net aware underground club artists in Berlin including Lotic, Renaissance Man and TCF.
