Heimspiel #19: Wyndham Wallace reads from “Lee, Myself and I” at Alter Roter Löwe Rein / Thursday, 19.11.2015

On November 19th, HEIMSPIEL returns to Alter Roter Löwe Rein for its 19th edition. This upcoming HEIMSPIEL features a reading by Wyndham Wallace from his book LEE, MYSELF & I about his touching relationship with the gifted but underappreciated singer, songwriter, producer and entrepreneur Lee Hazlewood, with whom he spent considerable time over the last years of his life. Wallace will also share rare film footage and discuss Hazlewood’s work.

‘Inside The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood’ is the subtitle of British author’s Wyndham Wallace LEE, MYSELF & I. Only a few people got know the multitalented maverick so intimately, and Wallace tells the story of the friendship that connected them from the early 2000s until Hazlewood’s death in 2007.

Lee Hazlewood

Their story begins with Hazlewood’s return to the music business after years out of the spotlight. More than three decades had passed since he and Nancy Sinatra had conquered the international Billboard Charts with smash hits like Summer Wine and These Boots Are Made For Walking, and for a while Hazlewood had continued to work as a songwriter, label owner, actor, film composer and scriptwriter. But in the late 60s / early 70s, he’d relocated temporarily from the States to Sweden, where he released a number of records often considered to be amongst his finest work, and then, after that, there was almost complete silence.

Wallace’s unlikely friendship with Hazlewood first developed in 1999 as he was running the London office of Berlin based record label City Slang. The young Englishman eventually became not only Hazlewood’s manager – helping to oversee the release of a number of records between 2002 and 2007 – but also Lee’s collaborator and confidante. Wallace recalls their short but intense friendship, sharing touching anecdotes and in so doing, develops an intimate, witty and moving portrait of a musician whose work has been neglected for far too long.

This event is recommended by Digital in Berlin. Check out our Facebook page to win tickets.
