Hyporeal by Ville Haimala (Amnesia Scanner) at Volksbühne / Tuesday, 9.12.2025

Hyporeal is the first large-scale solo work by Ville Haimala, best known as co-founder of Amnesia Scanner. Opening a new chapter in his career, the piece merges the duo’s extreme sonic palette with Haimala’s lesser-known, more delicate compositional work, heard in his scores for numerous acclaimed performances—most recently Anne Imhof’s Doom, The House of Hope at the Park Avenue Armory in New York.

At its core, Hyporeal is built around a fluid, cross-disciplinary ensemble. Jaakko Pallasvuo contributes the text, and Freeka Tet provides Feed Design + Hack. Haimala, Dorian Electra, Eliza Douglas, Tim Roth, and Ludwig Wandinger perform in a work that moves between written material, sonic structures, and live interaction. Roles remain open and adaptive, allowing each iteration to shift in focus and methodology.

Conceived as an ongoing project that lives both on- and offline, Hyporeal moves between music, poetry, and performance while embracing new creative tools and techniques. At its center is an ever-growing archive of recordings and sonic experiments by Haimala, functioning as source, method, and score. Collaborators such as writer-artist Jaakko Pallasvuo (avocadoibuprofen) and artist-hacker Freeka Tet feed into this evolving codex, building performances with Haimala and a shifting ensemble of musicians and performers. The premiere of Hyporeal (Proem) at the Volksbühne marks the first public chapter of the project and sets its outward trajectory in motion.

Amnesia Scanner is the Berlin-based Finnish duo Ville Haimala and Martti Kalliala. Since 2014 their work has spanned music writing, production, performance, and experimental staging. Known for their genre-generating inventiveness, their releases often develop a cult following among musicians and taste-makers, influencing the sound of the years that follow. This “influencing-the-influencers” position has established them as a sought-after electronic festival act, frequently headlining with technologically adventurous stage productions incorporating animatronics or audience participation.

Independently, Haimala frequently collaborates with artists such as Anne Imhof, contributing to major performances at Tate Modern, Palais de Tokyo, and the Park Avenue Armory. He has scored works for theater, opera, and film, with his latest theater score premiering at the 2025 Venice Biennale. He has also produced for FKA Twigs and Holly Herndon, and engineered records for artists including Eartheater.
