D/B Presents: UM:LAUT w/ Valgeir Sigurðsson & Swod @ Radialsystem V Berlin | Monday, 25.02.2013

UM:LAUT is a live platform for artists and labels availing themselves of various musical traditions, realising ambitious and unique projects regardless of genre boundaries.

The series’ focus lies on the experimental range between classical and electronic instrumentation, composition and improvisation, club and concert hall.

With Valgeir Sigurðsson, one of Iceland’s most renowned composers and producers will be the guest of UM:LAUT in February.

On his new album “Architecture Of Loss”, which he originally developed as a soundtrack for Stephen Petronio’s ballett of the same name, he arranges a wide and engrossing world of sound where string formations and subtle piano patterns encounter minimal electronica.

Sigurðsson, who has already worked as a producer for Björk, Sigur Rós, Ben Frost, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, or CocoRosie amongst others, experiments with diverse sounds and structures, plays with the possibilities of analogue and digital instrumentation, and creates both abstract and catchy sound patterns – an eclectic expedition between electronica and chamber music, ambient and post-folk, pop and new music.

The fact that film and theatre have had a formative influence on Oliver Doerell and Stephan Wöhrmann also applies to “Drei”, the third album of their common project Swod. While Wöhrmann’s piano playing produces atmospheric images on one’s inner eye, the subtle electronic sounds, percussions, field recordings and samples of the Belgian multi-instrumentalist Oliver Doerell complement the pieces, turning them into small soundtracks which evoke memories of half-forgotten films.

With repetitive piano patterns which are only occasionally interrupted with simple melodies and chords, the two audio directors manage to create a distinctive atmosphere which is emphasised with subtle samples and a warm bass sound – thereby creating material for the cinema in one’s mind at its best.

Oliver Doerell and Stephan Wöhrmann first met in Berlin in 1991 and started collaborating by producing soundtracks for silent films. In 2004, they released “Gehen” as the first album of their common project Swod, followed by “Sekunden” in 2007 and “Drei” in 2011.

Doerell plays the guitar, bass and various sorts of electronic instruments, with Wöhrmann joining him on piano and drums. Both of them have been active as composers for dance and film projects and have also been working as sound engineers. Stephan Wöhrmann is, for example, regularly touring with the internationally renowned choreographer Helena Waldmann.
