Ru is a solo project with Swedish roots and current residence in Berlin. Musically, Ru embodies an earthy acoustic folk with playful fairytale-indie, inspired by artists such as Vashti Bunyan, Sóley, José Gonzalez and Low Roar. The music is dreamy with a melancholic and poetic idiom – songs that take you on a journey through the rough seas and wild landscapes of the inner mind.

Live performing as a quartet, together with Hanna Gödl (bass), Povel Widestrand (piano) and Sam Campbell (drums).

1. What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
I have realized that the most essential part for me to be inspired to write music is to give myself enough time and space to do so. Except for that, inspiration is really everywhere, even in the smallest, most trivial things – like watering a plant or watching the colours of the sky. These sudden emotions of attachment and then let go. I guess, also the presence of sadness is a thing. When big emotional moments happen to us we tend to feel more moved to express and turn our feelings into poetry. Broken hearts are powerful things.

2. How and when did you get into making music?
I think music is something that has been around my whole life. In my family, we always sing and play music whenever we get together. As a kid, I sang in a choir and learned to play guitar and violin. Then I was in a world music orchestra and different pop bands in my teens. One thing just lead to another.

3. What are 5 of your favourite albums of all time?
So hard! The music I listen to nowadays is obviously different from what I listened to as a teenager. But in terms of nostalgia, these albums will always have a speacial place in my heart:

Teen Dream – Beach House
Funeral – Arcade Fire
I’m wide awake, it’s morning – Bright Eyes
Med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust – Sigur Rós
In Our Nature – José González

4. What do you associate with Berlin?
A big ego. And creative people. They usually have big egos.

5. What’s your favourite place in your town?
My apartment. It’s like my secret universe, where I feel the most comfortable and inspired. Especially in winter-times, I sometimes don’t go out for days. Then I like to build huts out of blankets and light-chains in my living room. Climb in there and just enjoy the silence.

6. If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
I would probably create virtual realities.

7. What was the last record/music you bought?
Sóley’s Endless summer. I found what she does so fantastic – the dark, theatrical lyrics and whimsical sound palette of her music.

8. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Jófríður Ákadóttir from Pascal Pinon and JFDR. She seems to be the coolest ever.

9. What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
I think I haven’t experienced my best gig yet. I’m looking forward to that day.

10. How important is technology to your creative process?
For me, technology is an instrument to turn song ideas into actual sounds. However, it’s not through technology that the music comes to my mind. I also feel, one of the biggest challenges in recording and producing today is to use technology consciously and sparsely. Not to always look for perfect.

11. Do you have siblings and how do they feel about your career/art?
Yes, I have an older brother. We are very different, but in other ways exactly the same. So in that way I think he understands my nerdiness.
