The Kiezsalon returns to MaHalla with performances by Penelope Trappes, a UK-based vocalist and ambient musician from Australia, Polish computer musician Marcin Pietruszewski as well as cellist/composer Justin Wright from Montreal.

The dramatically repurposed factory MaHalla has been the setting for Kiezsalon events over the past two years, and we’re delighted to return to the iconic industrial space once again in 2023. The vast turbine space located in Oberschöneweide in the district of Treptow-Köpenick — the city’s historic industrial zone was the inspiration for Fritz Lang’s iconic masterpiece Metropolis.

These days, it is home to numerous artists and cultural workers, and on Saturday, 26 August it will be home to Kiezsalon when we present Marcin Pietruszewski, Penelope Trappes and Justin Wright.

Marcin Pietruszewski is a composer and researcher. He is engaged in sound synthesis and composition with computers, exploring specific formal developments in the tradition of electroacoustic music and contemporary sound art. He works across the composition, pluriphonic installations, and radio productions. Recurring interests of his practice include synthetic sound, algorithmic systems, and the integration of scientific formalisms as compositional materials.

Collaborations include a sound installation ‘Auditory Scene Resynthesis as Cochlear Wavepackets’ (HKW, Berlin, 2021) with Jan St. Werner; NORMIFICATION with Florian Hecker. Recent sound installation – ‘Love Numbers’ – with Anthea Caddy will be premiered at Venice Music Biennale 2023.

Penelope Trappes is a UK-based Australian experimental vocalist, musician and soundscaper. In 2021, she completed her ambitious and other-worldly triptych with Penelope Three — an album of healing that reflects Penelope’s signature ambient gothic dreamlands that are equal parts shoegaze pop and surrealist soundscapes.

In their review of the album, Pitchfork claims Penelope ‘hones her songwriting and polishes her production without losing the atmospheric qualities that made the first two albums in this trilogy so captivating.’

Justin Wright is a Montreal-based cellist, composer, and multidisciplinary artist who strives to push the boundaries of new classical and experimental indie music, and to erase the lines between synthetic and acoustic sounds. A former molecular biology researcher, Justin takes an exploratory approach to creating music, integrating composition, production, and recording into a single process.

His latest record, A Really Good Spot, co-released by First Terrace Records & Beacon Sound, is a wildly creative montage of string improvisations, cassette loops, field recordings and, at certain pivotal moments throughout, poetry and voice.
