Where to From by Hildur Guðnadóttir at Volksbühne / 1+2.11.2025

Icelandic composer and Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy winner Hildur Guðnadóttir presents her first studio album in eleven years: Where to From will be performed for the first time on two evenings at Volksbühne.

With her new album, Guðnadóttir builds on her previous successes; her film scores have been honored with two Grammy Awards (Chernobyl, Joker) and an Academy Award (Joker). The current recording is both personal and universal – the work comprises nine intimate, contemplative original compositions that emerged from musical diary entries – short melodic fragments that Guðnadóttir recorded over several years. These sketches gave rise to a concentrated sound universe.

Where to From will be released on October 31, 2025, by Deutsche Grammophon. The accompanying booklet contains an interview between Guðnadóttir and film director Todd Field (TÁR) as well as additional atmospheric images by artist, choreographer, and director Gisèle Vienne.

Guðnadóttir is one of the defining voices of contemporary music, spanning experimental pop, chamber music, and film. With Where to From, she returns to a personal, reduced sound language—a “musical diary” that continues her ongoing exploration of sound, space, and time. The project is a commission by the Barbican Centre, the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, and other partner theaters and festivals.
