The documentary film Every Note You Play, written and directed by Mika Kaurismäki, will open in cinemas nationwide on June 26, 2025. Join us for the preview at Sputnik Kino on Tuesday, 3 June, followed by live music from Ludwig Wandinger and a Q&A with the director.
Filmed during ‘The Prequel’ of Monheim Triennale II in the summer of 2024 Kaurismäki documents a musical experiment: the meeting of internationally renowned musicians who come together to make music for the first time. The film captures this unique creative process. Immersing himself in this creative state of emergency with his camera, Kaurismäki visually realises the diverse and unique process in his own distinctive style.

Kaurismäki´s films often deal with interpersonal relationships, cultural encounters and the pitfalls of everyday life with a distinctive visual style and a touch of humor.
The protagonists form a cross-section of the international avant-garde of improvised music. Musicians from Europe, Asia and the United States, some established and internationally known in a variety of formations, others newcomers at the beginning of their careers, representing musical styles, instruments and musical traditions in the greatest possible diversity and range.
