D/B’s favourite Mixtape on the month: TOKIMONSTA from Los Angeles with her amazing THE FUNCTIONAL DYSFUNCTION MIX by MUSIQUE LARGE.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Born and raised in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, TOKiMONSTA (Jennifer Lee) was an unfocused pupil of classical piano. However, she has come to use this background to create vast textural soundscapes by utilizing live instruments, percussion, digital manipulation, and dusty vinyl. Through the creation of beats, she is able to fuse the sounds of the past with current music sensibilities into something advanced all while preserving old school vibes.
Her live performance is exciting as well as astounding intricate using a laptop, drum pad, MIDI controller, and an analog Roland SP 404. She is fearless and energetic having performed with the likes of Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Gaslamp Killer, and manyother of her fellow beat makers. TOKIMONSTA will be on Tour in France in November and hopefully in Germany.
