Born on April 5, 1990, in Gnas, Austria, and raised on a pig farm, Plaschg began writing and performing music on piano as a teenager and ultimately went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

She made her commercial recording debut as Soap & Skin in 2008 with an eponymous four-track EP. The following year at age 18 she released her debut album. Comparisons were often drawing between Plaschg and celebrated female singer/songwriters such as Cat Power, Nico, Kate Bush, and Björk.

Now 21, her new album features a cover of Desireless’ Europop hit ‘Voyage Voyage’, and was also apparently inspired by the sudden death of her father in 2009.

Warren appears with the words “Hello, hello, my name is Warren Suicide”. It’s a small face, the outlines slightly contorted, a slender figure, asexual, thin arms and legs. It smiled carefully, the teeth looking like those of a fish, the eyes with the look of a new-born baby, but wide open.

The Books are commonly cited by critics to be of a genre of their own, described by Nick Zammuto himself as collage music. Although they have said that their influences include Nirvana, David Bowie, Roxy Music as well as new wave and classical music, they do not show prominently in their music, though Zammuto was directly influenced by electronic musicians Squarepusher and Aphex Twin.

The Books’ music usually consists of acoustic instrumentation of folk melodies usually played on guitar, cello, banjo and more, combined with a diverse range of samples obtained from cassettes found in thrift stores, which are digitally processed and edited.

They also do not use a drum kit in any recordings or performances, but instead using inanimate objects like children’s toys and filing cabinets, which are sampled and looped. Some observers contend that their music is aleatoric, but Zammuto disagrees, saying the music is very tightly controlled.

Douglas P. of Death In June has played on well over a dozen Current 93 releases, and Steve Ignorant of Crass (using the name Stephen Intelligent), Boyd Rice, runologist Freya Aswynn, Nick Cave, Björk, Andrew W.K., Will Oldham, Ben Chasny, Rose McDowall, Tiny Tim, Tony Wakeford of Sol Invictus, Marc Almond, John Balance of Coil and Ian Read of Fire + Ice have also lent their talents over the years.

Tibet is fond of the works of American writer Thomas Ligotti, and invited him to collaborate with Current 93.

Current 93 | Since Yesterday

Current 93 have released some twenty albums, and many singles, as well as having been a guest on many of the above listed artists’ records, and others’ such as Nature and Organisation and The Hafler Trio.

Much of Current 93′s early work was similar to late 1970s and early 1980s industrial music: abrasive tape loops, droning synthesizer noises and Tibet’s distorted, excoriating vocals. This early work became influential with the goth scene. Later works found Tibet mostly casting off such trappings in favor of a more organic sound, labeled by some as “apocalyptic folk” music, occasionally featuring his sinister nursery rhyme-influenced singing and primarily acoustic folk-styled music.

Tibet’s lyrics have been fairly consistent, regardless of delivery: The earlier recordings reflect his preoccupation with death, Christ, mysticism, Aleister Crowley, Tibetan Buddhism, Gnosticism, runes, swastikas, Noddy, The Wicker Man, and a variety of occult notions. The later to present-day period of Current 93′s recordings increasingly reflect Tibet’s interest in Christian mysticism. Tibet has stated that he now identifies as a Christian.

Literary influences include Lautreamont’s Les Chants de Maldoror, the Bible, The Poetic Eddas, Francis Parker Yockey’s Imperium, Hildegard von Bingen, John Dee, Heptarchia Mystica, The Thunder, Perfect Mind, William Blake, Louis Wain, writer Thomas Ligotti, occult British author Arthur Machen (originator of the title “The Inmost Light”), M.R. James’s various ghost stories, The Cloud of Unknowing, Count Eric Stenbock, and Russell Hoban’s Riddley Walker.

Rarely, a band name has been more suitable: Whenever and wherever you hear Efterklang’s music, suddenly a wide space opens up right in front of you, or, perhaps, you’d better say: around you. It’s all about friendship, childhood and happiness and the never ebbing source of this trias.

Casper Clausens’s bright voice and the way he’s beating his harlekin-style-painted drums is, somehow, an invitation to tap this precious source by recalling the past, whenever you need it.

Modern Drift by Efterklang

Efterklang are: the five core members Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen, Thomas Husmer, Rune Mølgaard and Rasmus Stolberg. When performing live, the core five-piece band is complemented with the addition of violinist/singer Peter Broderick, trombonist/singer Niklas Antonson, pianist/singer Anna Brønsted and guitarist/singer Frederik Teige.

French filmmaker Vincent Moon and Efterklang’s 8 piece-live band met up on an island in the Danish country side. The objective was to shoot a film. A film with the same length as an album, and a film full of performances, experiments and collaborations.

Over an intense period of 4 days Efterklang collaborated with more than 200 local musicians, kids and parents, creating new performances and interpretations of songs from their Magic Chairs album. It was all filmed by Vincent Moon who same time conducted several filmic and musical experiments with Efterklang as his dedicated play mates.

And it’s this omni-present construction site noise, with all its scraping, scratching, drilling and chiseling, that povides the red thread throughout this album.

[GERMAN] Kurz vor der Sommerpause lädt Tobi Müller zu einer weiteren Runde über die künstlerische Arbeit in der Digitalisierung, wie immer mit unveröffentlichten Hörbeispielen aus der Werkstatt. Gäste sind ROBERT HENKE, bei Monolake Musiker und bei Ableton Entwickler, und die Journalistin und Autorin CLAUDIA WAHJUDI (Zitty).

ROBERT HENKE prägt seit zwanzig Jahren das elektronische Klangbild mit, das man sich als Konsument elektronischer Musik von Berlin macht. Mit Monolake hat Henke die Sophistication für echte und synthetisierte Sounds in einer Zeit verfeinert, als die Billigflugwelle und die digitalen Formate die Berliner Elektroszene zu verändern begannen.

Doch Henke ist kein Veteran der alten Zeit: Als Entwickler bei der Software-Firma Ableton ist er dafür verantwortlich, was Musiker auf der ganzen Welt morgen auf ihren Bildschirmen sehen werden. Und doch gehört er zu den wenigen in der Stadt, die eine exzellente Vinylpressung hinkriegen.

MONLAKE | Atlas

CLAUDIA WAHJUDI ist Kunst-Redakteurin bei der „zitty“ und schreibt darüber hinaus frei. Zum Beispiel das Buch „Metroloops“, das vor zehn Jahren, früher als andere, die Berliner Kulturökonomie in Off-Spaces zwischen Kunst und Techno beschrieben hat. Das Buch erschien in einer Zwischen-Zeit: Vor dem Haupstadt-Hype, der viele der von Wahjudi beschriebenen Räume rasch veränderte. Aber auch nach der Kulturalisierung ganzer Gebiete, die Wahjudi im Blick hat. Beim Schreiben, sagt Wahjudi, habe sie viel Monolake gehört.

Das kann kein Zufall sein: Henkes Musik weist geradezu forsch auf die räumliche Dimension des Hörens hin. Das Prinzip der Talk-Reihe zwischen Werkstatt, Musikören und Diskurstainment bleibt gleich: Der Musiker, also Henke, stellt unfertige Sachen vor, an denen er arbeitet. So kann man konkret über den unabläßigen Wandel des künstlerischen Alltags in der Digitalisierung reden. Und der zweite Gast, also Claudia Wahjudi, wird dazu beitragen, dass wir neben dem Kult des Konkreten auch die Sicht auf das Ganze nicht verlieren. Auf die Entwicklung der Räume und der Stadt.

Their unmissable live show fuses Burnt Friedman’s dub-infused electronica with former Can drummer, Jaki Liebezeit’s pristine skills on the drum kit.

The artists have consciously turned away from Western European, Anglo-American regulated rhythm (based on 4) in order to enrich their vocabulary with all globally relevant rhythms.

Jaki Liebezeit: “It possibly incorporated many elements of this earth without featuring any specific elements. The individual elements have been made abstract, no ethnic or national character remains, there’s nothing typical to Seville or Istanbul, but the properties held in common by all types of music have been abstracted and processed.” If it is still possible to establish a link with his past as a member of CAN, then it lies in the spirit with which he seeks, then as now, new musical forms. The post-CAN Liebezeit not only created his own cycle-based drum system but also developed an innovative drumset that concentrates on the essentials and permits a mode of playing that was already theoretically honed to be physically implemented in optimum fashion. Friedman’s programmed or played sequences and placeless sound particles adhere to the same understanding of rhythm, allowing the two heterogeneous sound generators to perfectly intermesh and form a unit – both acoustically and electronically, in terms of improvisation and concept alike. Friedman and Liebezeit came together in Cologne in 2001, having recognized that they were on the same musical wavelength and exploring the territory beyond the current style reproductions, that is to say: working remote from retro or recycling!
