The artists have consciously turned away from Western European, Anglo-American regulated rhythm in order to enrich their vocabulary with all globally relevant rhythms.

Jaki Liebezeit: “It possibly incorporated many elements of this earth without featuring any specific elements. The individual elements have been made abstract, no ethnic or national character remains, there’s nothing typical to Seville or Istanbul, but the properties held in common by all types of music have been abstracted and processed.”

If it is still possible to establish a link with his past as a member of CAN, then it lies in the spirit with which he seeks, then as now, new musical forms. The post-CAN Liebezeit not only created his own cycle-based drum system but also developed an innovative drumset that concentrates on the essentials and permits a mode of playing that was already theoretically honed to be physically implemented in optimum fashion.

Friedman’s programmed or played sequences and placeless sound particles adhere to the same understanding of rhythm, allowing the two heterogeneous sound generators to perfectly intermesh and form a unit – both acoustically and electronically, in terms of improvisation and concept alike.

Certainly one of the finest festivals in existence, Klangbad takes place again this weekend with a line-up as diverse and interesting as ever including: Cluster, Golden Disko Ship, Jaki Liebezeit, Gustav, Jimi Tenor, Robert Lippok, A Hawk & A Hacksaw and many more.

There are mainly 2 kinds of music festivals: average ones and adventurous ones. The former present music, which everyone already knows. The other has its finger on the pulse of time and its ears open.

They point out up-to-date trends, present upcoming musicians and bands, make new musical experiences and discoveries possible. The Klangbad festival at Scheer near Sigmaringen, South Germany, certainly belongs to this category and is the real festival insider’s tip for open ears. For 3 years now, the small village of Scheer has been experiencing a 3-day metamorphosis every summer.

The sleepy, seemingly pittoresque village invites you on a musically provocative, avantgarde and innovative journey, packed with surprises, crossing various genres.

Far away from the nowadays usual chart monotony and the artistic mainstreams, international artists meet local bands, which indeed differ in style, popularity and stage experience, but comply anyhow in one concise criterion: The love to authentic, expressive music.

Audience and artists become parts of a musical biosphere, and it is hard to find anything comparable in today’s profit-oriented event area.

Within the shortest time, a network of volunteers interested in culture and music, has formed. Only through the enthusiastic work of artists and workers, who are committed to the idea, is such an individual and independent project able to arise and to take place annually.

Now already in its 6th year. What started as a yearly meeting of the Klangbad family has in the mean time become a permanent fixture in the international festival landscape. Still, the festival hasn’t lost any of its original intimate charm. The growth of Klangbad hasn’t done any harm to the events’ familiar atmosphere. Consistently growing numbers of visitors and a line-up which easily meets international standards speak for themselves. 2009 sees, as ever, the curators and label managers Cornelia Paul and Hans Joachim Irmler strike a clever balance between crowd-pullers and new discoveries.
