Music as evocative as the stuff made by Com Truise – master of the transporting synth odyssey – necessitates videos that are nothing short of cinematic.

Hence the fully blown-out treatment for “Brokendate,” which rolls everything from eighties cop noir to Blade Runner retro-futurism to slo-mo Hype Williams nods into one five-minute world unto itself.

Com Truise is one of the many personas of producer and designer Seth Haley, born and raised in upstate New York and operating out of a 12’-overrun apartment in Princeton. An admitted synth obsessive, Com Truise is the maker of an experimental and bottom heavy style he calls “mid-fi synth-wave, slow-motion funk”.

Says previous collaborator and director Will Joines of 10 lb Pictures: “While I was cutting the ‘Fairlight’ video earlier in the year I kept thinking that it was fun, but if I ever had the opportunity to actually film something for one of Com Truise’s songs then I could really go all out and create this whole world that would be specifically tailored to his music.” Mission accomplished.

“INTO THE COSMOS” is ChopsyAnimations (chopsyanimation.com) first foray into the world of music videos, a tie-in with music maker Architeq from Tirk Records.
Originally it was conceived as a short film by Chopsy (director Darren Robbie), with a simple premise: “what happens to all the old vinyl people used to play? From out of attics, rubbish bins & forgotten shelving, the records are summoned to an old warehouse by a mysterious ‘collector’.”

Using a combination of stop-frame, pixellation, live-action & time lapse animation, it was shot in a variety of locations around Bristol & was created by shooting entirely in camera whenever possible (at other times multiple passes were combined).

By shooting each frame within a specific timescale for the external shots, we see vinyl records interacting with the ever changing natural light & weather.

“The short film was created on & off over a period of 7 months by a bunch of friends between paid work, a real labour of love. It was shot in late winter earlier this year with the spring & summer being used to do all the post. All the records you see were cut before shooting, with new centre labels stuck onto them to create the desired visual effect of them spinning & bouncing through the ground, they were then animated on location using weighted rigs.”

Architeq added the music & sound effects after filming finished & the first edit was completed. Rigs were removed, different passes combined & shadows cleaned up in AfterEffects. Motion capture on location was achieved by using Dragon software on a laptop, which was in turn powered by a portable caravan battery.

“Descendants” is a 14 minute animated short about the wish of attaining the unattainable and about the fact that something good can evolve from something evil.
The two main characters are flowers (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg & Christy Scott Cashman) who grow on the edge of a clearing next to one another.
One is old and jaded by a mysterious history – the other one still young, vivid and curious.

Destiny has brought these two together and it seems as if they would exist without possibility for change, until one day a visitor to the clearing brings something unexpected to their lives.

24 filmakers from around the world come together to create “Coalition of the Willing” an awesome animated film about the online war against global warming in a “post Copenhagen” world.

‘Coalition of The Willing’ is a film that discusses how we can use new internet technologies to leverage the powers of activists, experts, and ordinary citizens in collaborative ventures to combat climate change.

Through analyses of swarm activity and social revolution, ‘Coalition of the Willing’ makes a compelling case for the new online activism and explains how to bring the fight against global warming to the people.

As the film tackles the subject of online activism, we decided that the logical home for ‘Coalition of The Willing’ is here online. Between the start of February and the beginning of June 2010, Coalition of the willing was released in sections onto this website. Groups of sections were released roughly every 2-3 weeks, with the final completed film going online at the start of June.

This un-conventional release strategy allowed us to build and engage with an audience whilst the film itself was being made. “coalitionfilm” has now become an online environmental brand in itself, with contributors Tweeting and Facebooking every day about issues discussed in the film; environmentalism, open source culture and swarm politics. Here you can download the Script as PDF.

One part of these great production was the berlin based company Parasol Island.

Parasol produces nationally and internationally award-winning film, animation and interactive projects for an exclusive client portfolio, ranging from lifestyle and entertainment companies to the consumer industry.

Aside from the high quality technique and content that Parasol exhibits, clients appreciate the aesthetic standard which has been established throughout recent years, earning Parasol the reputation as a creative source and stronghold for ambitious agencies and sophisticated brands alike.

His films have been featured at numerous international film festivals around the world, including the Montreal World Film Festival, the Festival International du Court Métrage de Clermont-Ferrand, the Commonwealth Film Festival and the Festival de Namur.

Boivin started his creative career by drawing comic books, and, in his words, “quickly discovered that it was faster to tell a story with video.” He cites Tom Waits, Roy Andersson, Federico Fellini, and Paul Thomas Anderson as influences on his style.

Meredith Jane Monk is an American composer, performer, director, vocalist, filmmaker, and choreographer. Since the 1960s, Monk has created multi-disciplinary works which dwell in the spaces between music, theatre, and dance, recording extensively for ECM Records.

Meredith Monk is primarily known for her vocal innovations, including a wide range of extended techniques, which she first developed in her solo performances prior to forming her own ensemble.

Meredith Monk Documentary / Part 1 of 8

In December 1961, she appeared at the “Actor’s Playhouse” in Greenwich Village (NYC) as a solo dancer in an off-Broadway children’s musical theater production of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” entitled “Scrooge” (music and lyrics by Norman Curtis; directed and choreographed by Patricia Taylor Curtis). In 1964, she graduated from Sarah Lawrence College after studying with Beverly Schmidt Blossom and in 1968 she founded The House, a company dedicated to an interdisciplinary approach to performance.

Meredith Monk Documentary / Part 2 of 8

Monk’s performances have influenced many artists, including Bruce Nauman, whom she met in San Francisco in 1968. In 1978 Monk formed Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble (modelled after similar ensembles of musical colleagues such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass) to explore new and wider vocal textures and forms which often were contrasted with minimal instrumental textures. Monk then began a long-standing relationship with the Walker Art Center, which continues to showcase her work to this day. Pieces from this time include Dolmen Music (1979), which also was recorded for her first album released at Manfred Eicher’s record label ECM in 1981.

Meredith Monk Documentary / Part 3 of 8

In the 1980s, Monk wrote and directed two films, Ellis Island (1981), and Book of Days (1988), which developed from a single idea; “One day during summer of 1984, as I was sweeping the floor of my house in the country, the image of a young girl (in black and white) and a medieval street in the Jewish community (also in black and white) came to me”, as Monk recounts in the liner notes of the ECM-recording. Apart from the film, different versions exist of this piece; two for the concert hall, and an album, produced by Meredith Monk and Manfred Eicher as “a film for the ears.”

In the early 1990s, Monk composed an opera called Atlas, which premiered in Houston Texas in 1991. She has also written pieces for instrumental ensembles and symphony orchestras. Her first symphonic works were Possible Sky (2003) and Stringsongs (2004), which was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet. In 2005, events all over the world were held in celebration of the 40th anniversary of her career, including a concert in Carnegie Hall featuring Björk, Terry Riley, DJ Spooky (who sampled Monk on his album Drums of Death), John Zorn, and the new music ensembles Alarm Will Sound and Bang on a Can All-Stars, along with the Pacific Mozart Ensemble.

Meredith Monk Documentary / Part 4 of 8

Monk has won numerous awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship, and she holds honorary Doctor of Arts degrees from Bard College, the University of the Arts (Philadelphia), The Juilliard School, the San Francisco Art Institute and the Boston Conservatory. In 2007, she received the Demetrio Stratos International Award for musical experimentation.

Her music was used in films by the Coen Brothers (The Big Lebowski, 1998) and Jean-Luc Godard (Nouvelle Vague, 1990 and Notre musique, 2004).

John Milton Cage Jr. (September 5, 1912 – August 12, 1992) was an American composer, philosopher, poet, music theorist, artist, printmaker, and amateur mycologist and mushroom collector. A pioneer of chance music, electronic music and non-standard use of musical instruments, Cage was one of the leading figures of the post-war avant-garde.

Critics have lauded him as one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century. He was also instrumental in the development of modern dance, mostly through his association with choreographer Merce Cunningham, who was also Cage’s romantic partner for most of their lives.

John Cage Documentary / Part 1 of 7

Cage is perhaps best known for his 1952 composition 4′33″, the three movements of which are performed without a single note being played. The content of the composition is meant to be perceived as the sounds of the environment that the listeners hear while it is performed, rather than merely as four minutes and thirty three seconds of silence, and the piece became one of the most controversial compositions of the twentieth century.

John Cage Documentary / Part 2 of 7

Another famous creation of Cage’s is the prepared piano (a piano with its sound altered by placing various objects in the strings), for which he wrote numerous dance-related works and a few concert pieces, the best known of which is Sonatas and Interludes (1946–48).

His teachers included Henry Cowell (1933) and Arnold Schoenberg (1933–35), both known for their radical innovations in music, but Cage’s major influences lay in various Eastern cultures. Through his studies of Indian philosophy and Zen Buddhism in the late 1940s, Cage came to the idea of chance-controlled music, which he started composing in 1951. The I Ching, an ancient Chinese classic text on changing events, became Cage’s standard composition tool for the rest of his life.

John Cage Documentary / Part 3 of 7

In a 1957 lecture, Experimental Music, he described music as “a purposeless play” which is “an affirmation of life – not an attempt to bring order out of chaos nor to suggest improvements in creation, but simply a way of waking up to the very life we’re living.

Philip Morris Glass (born January 31, 1937) is an American music composer. He is considered one of the most influential composers of the late 20th century and is widely acknowledged as a composer who has brought art music to the public (along with precursors such as Richard Strauss, Kurt Weill and Leonard Bernstein).

Philip Glass Documentary / Part 1 of 6

Although his music is often, though controversially, described as minimalist, he distances himself from this label, describing himself instead as a composer of “music with repetitive structures.” Although his early, mature music is minimalist, he has evolved stylistically. Currently, he describes himself as a “Classicist”, pointing out that he is trained in harmony and counterpoint and studied Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with Nadia Boulanger.

Philip Glass Documentary / Part 2 of 6

Glass is a prolific composer: He has written works for his own musical group which he founded, the Philip Glass Ensemble (for which he still performs on keyboards), as well as operas, musical theatre works, eight symphonies, eight concertos, solo works, string quartets, and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards.
