An admitted synth obsessive, Com Truise is the maker of an experimental and bottom heavy style he calls “mid-fi synth-wave, slow-motion funk”.Haley’s been making music on the side for roughly a decade—going through pseudonyms like toothbrushes (Sarin Sunday, SYSTM, Airliner)—first as a DJ, and currently, as an excavator of softer, window-fogging synth-wave.

While subliminally informed by both parental record collections and hints of faded electronics product design, Haley’s Com Truise project isn’t just nostalgia capitalization. There are fragments (read:

DNA strands) of Joy Division, New Order, and the Cocteau Twins, but it’s like you’re hearing them through the motherboard of a waterlogged Xbox—demented and modern. He’s got a way of making familiar things sound beautifully hand-smeared.

The first Com Truise release was the Cyanide Sisters EP—distributed for free on the AMdiscs label—where mellow stone-outs like “Sundriped” and “Slow Peels” sat next to harder IDM bangers (“BASF Ace” and “IWYWAW”) and bumpy alt-funk trips (“Norkuy” and “Komputer”).

After that came a single “Pyragony/Trypyra,” and a series of eclectic podcast mixes titled “Komputer Cast.” Now comfortably situated amidst the Ghostly roster, he’s prepping his next warped pillage, and hopefully not changing that name again.

Sascha Ring, better known as Apparat heads to the top of Teufelsberg outside of Berlin to speak about assembling amazing DJ-Kicks mix. Apparat’s DJ-Kicks will be out October 26th on K7.

With the tracklist aligning variant artists like Oval, Autechre, Tim Hecker and Telefon Tel Aviv–but given his recent tour at the start of the year, it’s simply a representation of where he’s at in terms of modern music.

Aptly joking that his DJ KiCKs selection reflects his style to “not really have a style” it’s evident that Ring is more than aware that his contribution to the series might look ‘intelligent’ on paper.

Apparat DJ-Kicks Interview

Achieving a sense of progression in the mix through both his selections and his awareness of sonic space, Ring manages to harness his enthusiasms for frequency perfect soundscapes, often creating moments of sheer beauty out of his polarized composite parts.

“The mix isn’t that balanced when it comes to melody I guess,” he continues, considering his point. “There’s a lot of sweetness on there, but it is dark and mysterious at points. I guess the bittersweet-ness has long been kind of my thing and with this mix I was just trying to spice it up a bit.”

TRACKLIST

Ben Butler & Mouse Pad is Joe Gay vs You/Germlin’s new project. Anyone exposed to the furious shake & pop of pixelated DIY dance fury from either act should expect excellence.
Joe Howe aka. Ben Butler & Mousepad (DJ) has confirmed his participation in SCOTTRONICS. Joe will kick off the after-party on the Badeschiff’s outdoor beach with an electric DJ set!

Excellence as in a cloud of pink TV static spreading over psychedelic gradient skies outside the window of your commuter train, analogical lighting bolts blasting in a rainbow coloured Sabbath which burns into the circuitry of your brain like the soundtrack of an old coin-op beat-em-up designed by a crazed cabal of progressive wizards and bearded Sci-Fi savants.

Ben Butler & Mousepad / Other Islands | Animation: Chris Pell

Yep, that kind of excellence, like Golden Axe’s red dragons invading the hallucinatory dreamscapes of a Philip K. Dick pulp which was never published because it was too weird, and too close to the bone.

There is, in Ben Butler’s music, a bristling and expansive melodic madness inherited from the baroque experiments of 1970s studio megalomaniacs such as Vangelis, Alan Parsons, Triumvirat or even ELO, devoured, digested, sent back in time and thrown up over some bizarrely funky rhythmic backdrops that one would perhaps define as nerdxploitation, hadn’t this term been spiritually trademarked by the evil ghouls of the MTV.

Elisabeth Esselink aka Solex was without a doubt a firm favourite of the great John Peel, with no less than 6 Peel sessions to her credit.‘

Her new record Amsterdam Throwdown King Street Showdown may be a collaboration with Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion) and Cristina Martinez (Boss Hog) but it lacks none of that distinctive Solex sound. Out now on Bronzerat, Amsterdam Throwdown, King Street Showdown, is highly recommended for anyone looking for a truly original style of music.

Punk rock royalty Jon Spencer and Cristina Martinez have joined forces with Dutch electronic heroine Elisabeth Esselink, aka Solex, for the most exciting collaboration/confrontation since The Jetsons meet The Flinstones. Imagine if you will, a fisticuffs of funk, garage and soul between Captain Beefheart and Ike & Tina, with a sprinkling of hip-hop courtesy of Mike Ladd.

Solex VS Cristina Martinez & Jon Spencer Comic Video

The triumvirate have created a sonic dilemma with Amsterdam Throwdown, King Street Showdown! Do you listen or do you dance? Whichever, you’ll have your shrink on speed dial as you contemplate whether it mocks Jesus to have this much fun, what with the apocalypse being just around the corner and all.

Amsterdam Throwdown, Kingstreet Showdown! kicks off with the sugar-fix that is “Bon Bon”, a dirty, funky concoction, complete with strings. “Galaxy Man” is an outer-space go-go party with Link Wray’s corpse on the decks! “Dog Hit” is a tale of irresponsible pet ownership, as if told by sexed-up and AWOL philharmonic orchestra members on MDMA! “Aapie” is a tribute to our ancestry and invites us to unleash our inner monkey! As you can see, there is something for all tastes.

Throughout, Elisabeth Esselink has ingeniously fattened up a rich tapestry of cool, the perfect canvas for Cristina and Jon, who pepper-spray it with personalized lunacy whilst shrugging off the wannabes scrambling for their plinth. To whit: 3 pioneers. Meet them in the street after dark. There’s gonna be a psychedelic genre-bending knife fight. So don’t forget your scuba fins and get ready to dance!

Tunng are often noted for their use of strange instruments, including sea shells. They supported Doves on dates at the end of their 2005 tour. Member Becky Jacobs is the younger sister of musician Max Tundra.

Besides releasing three albums and numerous singles since 2004, Tunng have covered Bloc Party’s song “The Pioneers”. Both the original and cover were featured in the 3rd season of The O.C. (“The Man of the Year”, Episode 24). They also covered Tim Buckley’s “No Man Can Find The War” for the 2005 tribute album Dream Brother: The Songs of Tim and Jeff Buckley.

Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson are a young and excellent postrock Band from Oslo/Norway. D/B highly recommended, not only for postrock fans.

Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson came to be when a group of four classmates Morten (drums), Gjermund (guitar), Torbjørn (guitar) and Audun (bass) at the Bodø University decided to start a band in 2003. Their first demo, recorded in early 2004, consisted of everything from pop, via country and punk, to long and dreamy post-rock tunes. They decided they liked the latter genre, represented by the song “A List Not To Be Read At Your Wedding”, the best, and thus started making more songs similar to that one.

YPOFH / we may be remembered by what we did when we sat down

During the following year they recorded a series of songs in their school’s bomb shelter, six of which ended up on their début album, Unnoticeable In A Tiny Town, Invisible In The City, released on their own newly started label, How is Annie Records, on May 21st 2005.

“Unnoticeable…” received a number of quite complimentary reviews nationally. Norway’s largest and longest running online music newspaper, Panorama, called it “A flood of feelings” and “world class post-rock”, deeming it the second best Norwegian album of 2005. They were hailed as the Norwegian newcomers of the year by the magazine Puls.

After his rediscovery in the mid 90s, his faithful have featured him on a slew on singles, a full-length on Desco Records entitled “Let’s Get It On’, a full-length on Soul Fire entitled “Problems”, and on Sharon Jones’s critically acclaimed album, “Naturally”.

Most recently, he has featured on a number of tracks by French house producer, Martin Solveig. Suprisingly, many of of those songs have become top ten hits for Solveig and have turned Lee Fields into a bonafide celebrity in France and other parts of Europe. Yet, outside of a rabid cult following, his story remained untold in America.

When Truth & Soul rose from Soul Fire’s ashes in 2004, the first mission of label owners/producers Jeff Silverman and Leon Michels, was to record a sweet soul record that would be modeled after the near perfect formula that bands like The Moments, The Delfonics, and The Stylistics had created. In a nutshell – the duo wanted an album full of music that was both tough as nails and sweet as honey.

They wanted ballads laced with lush strings and smooth vocal harmonies layered over a hard-hitting rhythm section. Michels and Silverman enlisted the service of a the group of New York studio musicians that have provided the back drop for records by The Dap Kings, Amy Winehouse, Bronx River Parkway, El Michels Affair and TV on The Radio. Those musicians include Leon Michels, Homer Steinweiss, Quincy Bright, Nick Movshon, Thomas Brenneck, Toby Pazner, Aaron Johnson, Dave Guy, Michael Leonhart, and members of legendary doo-wop group, The Del-Larks.

Four years later and Lee Fields & The Expressions have successfully created a unique and personal sound that can hold court with the bands they set out to emulate. However, what they’ve created in the process goes beyond just a carbon copy of a sweet soul music from the 60′s and early 70′s. The formula has remained the same but the style has been adapted for the ears of youngsters whose experiences with soul began with Amy, not Al, Otis and Marvin. Thirty years of retrospection has colored this cross-generational melding of the minds. It sounds odd on paper, but the results are classic: hip hop-reared record collectors come full circle to produce an album of beatuful soul music with one of the progenitors who made it all possible.

Joanna Newsom’s new album “Have One On Me” will be released by Drag City on February 23. Drag City streaming already ‘81′ from Newsom’s new triple album, Have One on Me.

Joanna Newsom is an American harpist, pianist, and singer-songwriter from Nevada, California. Newsom was first taught to play the Celtic harp by a local teacher in Nevada City. Later on she switched to the pedal harp and started composing. Newsom studied composition and creative writing at Mills College, Oakland, California. After touring with Will Oldham, she was quickly signed to Drag City and released her debut album The Milk-Eyed Mender.

Joanna Newson / Sawdust And Diamonds / Live in Glasgow

Shortly thereafter, Newsom toured with Devendra Banhart and Vetiver and made an early UK appearance at the Green Man Festival in Wales, returning to headline in 2005 and 2007, respectively. Although her harp playing is not completely divorced from conventional harp techniques, she considers her style distinct from that of classically focused harpists. Joanna has also spoken out against the role of classical harpists, and considers many harpists to be “artless”.

She has been strongly influenced by polyrhythms. Her harp teacher, Diana Stork, taught her the basic pattern of four beats against three, which creates an interlocking, shifting pattern that can be heard on Ys, particularly in the middle section of “Sawdust & Diamonds.” The media have sometimes labeled her as one of the most prominent members of the modern psych folk movement, although she does not acknowledge ties to any particular musical scene. Her songwriting incorporates elements of Appalachian music, and avant-garde modernism.
Newsom’s vocal style (in the November 2006 issue of The Wire she described her voice as “untrainable”) has shadings of folk and Appalachian shaped-note timbres. Newsom has, however, expressed disappointment at comments that her singing is “child-like.”

Stephen Wilkinson aka. Bibio, is a British music producer. I know this guy for a long time now (since his first release actually), but I think after his two excellent releases last year on Warp he became very well known.

A resident of the West Midlands, England, Stephen Wilkinson developed a passion for experimental music during his time at Middlesex University in London, where he studied “sonic arts”. He developed his own style of music in a hippiesk instrumental electronica way, drawing from contemporary experimental electronica bands such as Boards of Canada, and incorporating field recordings and found sounds.

Bibio / Ambivalence Avenue

Electronically modified guitar melodies and droning synthesizer sounds are a recurring theme in his pieces, causing many people to label his music as a hybrid of electronica or intelligent dance music and traditional folk music.

His music has recently been licensed for commercial campaigns by L.L. Bean and Toyota. In 2009, he contributed a cover of the Boards of Canada track “Kaini Industries” to the Warp20 (Recreated) compilation.
