Nat Baldwin has an impressive résumé. He’s studied under free jazz guru Anthony Braxton, contributed to Department of Eagles’ In Ear Park as well as Vampire Weekend’s Contra.

He also has been the bassist in Dirty Projectors. Over the course of nine years, he’s additionaly recorded several solo full-lengths that are equally varied. People Changes, his fifth, is a rich addition.

The recording writing process this time out took Baldwin to a remote cabin in Maine. That sort of setting may sound familiar, and, like Bon Iver’s debut splash, this is a record with a wonderful ambiance.

Nat Baldwin | A little lost

Unlike most of 2008′s Most Valuable Player, People Changes finds Baldwin largely on his own: just his voice and bass, with help from a few friends.

Baldwin sings in a lovely melisma, the same slippery style used by his Dirty Projectors bandmate Dave Longstreth. But while Longstreth’s voice will often crunch itself up into grotesque shapes, Baldwin keeps his airborne.

It serves as a terrific juxtaposition to the spare arrangements of People Changes. The earthen tones of his double-bass act as both anchor and trampoline for Baldwin’s voice, an instrument that flutters and swoops as it pleases.

Whether Baldwin is singing with his throat or his bow, there’s a thrilling feeling of freedom to it all.

Valentin started playing piano when he was seven and continued in the classical music wave, picking up guitar on the way, until he got out of high school. Star Slinger is Manchester based one-man hip hop beat machine Darren Williams.

The 24-year-old takes influences from all over the world, from past to present – from memphis rap to shoegaze. He studied music technology at Leeds Metropolitan University and tried different styles of music before starting his Star Slinger project. Since then, he’s released a bounty of original beats as well as unofficial remixes for artists including Deerhunter and Small Black.

Star Slinger is crafting his own coolly archetypal stoned-soul clubhouse where genres mingle naturally rather than being mashed together like a bunch of surly drunks in a police-station holding tank.

In his hands, Deerhunter’s doleful shimmer blooms into a psychedelic hip-hop swirl, the Staple Singers nudge you awake like that Japanese slow-drip iced coffee you can’t afford, and Cocteau Twins’ Elisabeth Fraser echoes over a drum’n'bass skitter.

Swedish act Niki and the Dove combine epic choruses with Eastern European drum styles to make soaring songs dripping with euphoria.

Little is known about this project but its perplexing name and intriguing videos are at odds with the straightforward and unabashed dramatic nature of the songs. They want to pursue a vision of deep dark woods that they want to put into the music.

Vondelpark are fairly mysterious sorts – search online and you’ll find a give-nothing-away interview from last year, and a selection of official (and not) video clips accompanying songs from this release and its predecessor, but actual concrete facts are in short supply.

But this just adds to the appeal: the listener is able to attach their own faces, their own meanings, to music that exists somewhere between what’s commonly termed chillwave and something rather more satisfying of soul.

One of the UKs hottest female artists, Ikonika has sprung onto the scene with the” Contact, Love, Want, Have” album. Growing up in London on a diet of r&b, hip hop and garage, it is no surprise Ikonika relays these influences into her productions. Ikonika’s music can only be described as a concoction of melodic synth patterns, driving drums, melancholic sub bass and unorthodox song structures, with the backing of Warp, Hyperdub, and Planet Mu, she makes a creative and influential brand of british funk.

After playing two packed shows at Berlin’s West Germany venue and a sold out concert at HAU 2 theatre, John Maus finally does Berghain – him being one of the most stunning, daftest, berserk and intense performers of our time.

When John Maus wasn’t playing keyboards for Animal Collective, Panda Bear, and Haunted Graffiti, he was writing and recording his own hermetic, experimental, and oftentimes misunderstood compositions.

Drawing on artists like David Bowie, Scott Walker, and Joy Division, Maus’ swollen, distorted, and unabashedly strange debut Songs was more or less reviled by any and all music critics within earshot. Commenting on Maus’ vocal style, Drowned in Sound’s Mike Diver said that while some listeners “…will hear a little Nick Cave in it…others will hear a man crapping out of his mouth.”

In spite of the harsh criticism (much of which Maus posted, to hilarious effect, on his MySpace profile), Maus continued to generate new material. His second album, Love Is Real, was released on Upset the Rhythm in 2007. Four years later, he returned with We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves, which featured some of his most dynamic and nuanced music to date.

As support plays Gary War, who shares Maus’ love for cheerful-noisy lo-fi synth pop.

Ten years since its initiation and a more than touching band history, New York City’s Gang Gang Dance are one of the greatest and maddest live bands of the present day.

Their music consists of exotic scales, influences from dub, grime and noise music, and the maverick vocals and lyrics of singer Lizzi Bougatsos.

“We have a hard time with classifications because we really don’t fit in anywhere,” vocalist Lizzi Bougatsos told Innerview. “Our direction comes from a confusion of our eclectic musical tastes, and we consider it a positive thing.”
In 2005, Gang Gang Dance released the record that redefined what they stood for: God’s Money. Intensely rhythmic and driven by percussion, the album’s careening, tribalist songs earned comparisons to Animal Collective, and showed the scope of their influences.

“We wanted the sound to be more of bass heavy and sharp, percussion-oriented thing,” DeGraw admitted to Cyclic Defrost, “like something that could fit sonically or production wise into the playlist of hip hop radio.”

San Francisco-based drone duo Barn Owl follow in the footsteps of provocative avant-gardists Alice Coltrane and Keiji Haino, while building on the doom metal foundation planted by Black Sabbath.

Guitarists Jon Porras and Evan Caminiti started playing music together soon after meeting in an American Indian science class at San Francisco State in 2005 and realizing they had similar backgrounds playing in metal bands and a shared interest in meditative, psychedelic music.

The two made home recordings for the latter half of the 2000s while pursuing a number of side projects. Barn Owl’s year of fruition proved to be 2010: as well as starting their own label, Electric Totem, the band released three albums — Conjurer on Rootstrata, Headlands on Important Records, and Ancestral Star after signing to Thrill Jockey. The band kept up its head of steam by touring internationally as well as kicking off 2011 with the 24-minute Shadowland EP, which was recorded by Phil Manley (Trans Am) in San Francisco, and following the EP with the full-length Lost in the Glare during the summer of that year. Also recorded by Manley, the sound of the harmonium — which was so prevalent on earlier releases — was replaced by a Farfisa organ for this outing.

Narcotic-hypnotic music for somnambulists: with Pure X and Sleep ∞ Over, the concert series »Kometenmelodien« showcases two of the most interesting representatives of contemporary and timeless american pop music.

Both rank first in terms of ambiguity in musical expression such as the use of echo, reverb, distortion and opaque vocals.

Austin, Texas trio Pure X play languid, dreamy, noise pop that floats on a raft of thick, distorted guitar sounds, carried along by a current of simple but determined rhythms.
Aligning themselves with the like-minded bands on Austin’s Light Lodge Records label, Pure X began releasing a steady stream of 7″ and cassette releases; their favored recording technique was to cut everything live to tape, with no overdubs and minimal editing. After receiving encouraging reviews for their initial releases and live shows, Pure X came to the attention of Acephale Records, who released the band’s first full-length album, Pleasure, in the summer of 2011.

Sleep ∞ Over was formed in early 2010 in Austin TX. With a few rough demos recorded live on a handheld tape recorder, the band (consisting at the time of Stefanie Franciotti and former members Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown) quickly attracted the attention of the esteemed Night People label who released the first Sleep ∞ Over EP on cassette. Although the tape came during a flood of hazy lo-fi releases, Sleep ∞ Over’s melodically-driven aesthetic rose to the top of the saturated genre.
Distant and dreamy, Sleep ∞ Over’s music often sounds like a chopped-and-screwed homage to the Cocteau Twins.

≠ (not equal) is a new series of events at Berghain, which aims to situate the relationship between sound research, performance and narration in contemporary electronic music.

The focus is on both sonic experiments and on an ongoing exploration into the deep time of techno, so that with ≠ (not equal) , multi-disciplinary work and rich musical textures meet on media art.

Demdike Stare present at today’s kick-off their audio-visual live set with occult and dusty sound collages that are situated between oriental dub and ritualistic ambient techno while their visuals evoke memories of the heyday of the exploitation and horror cinema.

Emptyset | Awake

Along with them comes Andy Stott, explorer of a twisted and dense house music sound. Emptyset from Bristol present their heavy, tectonically-rhythmic industrial sound. They are supported by Joanie Lemercier, who is with his AntiVJ collective onre of the most important video artists of recent years.

The concert part of the evening will be opened by Tropic of Cancer, a duo from Los Angeles, which has dedicated itself to a misanthropic post-punk sound. All these performances are framed by DJ sets from Raim, Milton Bradley and Opium Hum.

KRAKE ist an annual Berlin based festival for challenging electronic music and visual transduction initiated by Nico Deuster of KILLEKILL and Holger Hilgers.

The festival took place at the Suicide Circus for the first time in 2010 and was an overwhelming success: numerous groundbreaking artists of high reputation rocked the crowd such as Warp’s electronica heroes PLAID,

The Berlin based Ad Noiseam label was born in early 2001 as a creative out-
put for the Recycle Your Ears web magazine, which has been active between
1998 and 2003.

Having reached the (for an underground label venerable) age of 10 years in
2011, Ad Noiseam is celebrating with label-oriented festivals in several coun-
tries accross the world.

Focusing mostly on electronic music, Ad Noiseam is however not restricted

A spectre is haunting the world – the spectre of music. Music today is often simply perceived as commodity and is reduced to the functional.

The digital revolution has seemingly left music in an eternal return. Since its beginnings, music has fought against such limitations by allowing us to experience a space beyond the everyday. Whether composed or improvised, whether soaring ecstatically or mathematically arranging time – music’s spiritual moments deal with transcendence in all cultures.

The magic of sound builds a bridge to those spaces that elude language and leave the natural sciences baffled. Although we can talk about it, only a moment’s soul actually brings us together. Music transcends the borders to a deeper understanding of transience and a conscious experience of life: We All Get It In The End.

John Cage | Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano [1/5]

Even today, the memento mori of the Middle Ages resounds in blues, folk, metal and avant-garde music. The Ars Nova Ensemble passes through this last gate into the realm of luminous shadows with liturgically inspired choral compositions by György Ligeti, Jonathan Harvey and Claude Vivier. Albert Ayler was also searching for magical sounds when he conferred a loud voice to the African diaspora’s culture of remembrance with Ghosts.

Evan Parker & Kammerflimmer Kollektief will transform this ascension into the tonal here-and-now in a unique cooperation. The Romanian composers Ana-Maria Avram and Iancu Dumitrescu employ computers for this journey, just as science fiction uses technology: as a medium into other dimensions and unknown spheres. In collaboration with the ensemble mosaik, this magick will be conjured into being for Lux Aeterna with the premier of their commissioned pieces Einfühlung and Nouvel Ascent II.

PopMusic is also propelled by such epiphanies, which transform sound into a bodily experience and lead all synapses to one certitude. Past, present and future form the promise of a better life in freedom. Dietmar Dath situates this musical metaphysics in cultural theory with his lecture Woran wir Menschen merken werden, daß wir gestorben sind. Mark Fisher follows this up with his Birth, School, Work, Death and Music, in which he uses Jacques Derrida’s concept of Hauntology to describe developments in digital culture that use nostalgic codes to enter new spaces and break through reality.

Their first show in Berlin in 2007 has been a feast, now they are coming again: Konono No.1 is a collective of Congolese musicians standing for an indigenous urban sound of amplified likembés (thumb pianos).

Taken together, the patterns of all of Konono No 1′s likembé-players sum up to a mind-bending symphony of metallic sound, backed up by group percussion and vocals. Konono No- 1 usually comes along with their own dancers and street corner sound system. The ultimate experience of urban sub-sahara africa!

The likembé is a thumb piano (similar to the mbira), a pocket version of famous african xylophones, which is why it is played a in the same patterns, with two or more players interlocking. Though seperated to different tracks on their new album “Assume Crash Position”, the typical sound Konono No 1 usually is blended into one long song, one trance-like session.

Promoted in Europe and the US by Björk at first, with their own albums and the “congotronics”-series Konono No. 1 have long become a famous act on their own. World music, electronica and avant-rock aficionados have all been equally amazed by this otherworldly music, which has driven the international press to come up with some surprising comparisons (from Can and Krautrock to Jimi Hendrix, Lee Perry and proto-techno!…).
