MOTE presents Massimo Pupillo/Tony Buck/Mette Rasmussen + Andrea Belfi at Kantine am Berghain / Wednesday, 16.03.2016

Mote studio presents a unique trio for the very first time on stage in this constellation: Massimo Pupillo, bass/double bass player and composer, founding member of Zu, will perform together with Tony Buck, polyhedric artist and drummer of “The Necks”, and saxophonist Mette Rasmussen, one of the prominent new voices of the fearless impro-jazz scene. Andrea Belfi, drummer, percussionist and experimental musician, will open the night presenting his excellent solo live-set.

Massimo Pupillo is a bass and double bass player and composer. Best known as the bassist of Zu, with whom he produced 15 albums on labels like Atavistic / Touch n ‘Go, Southern, Heads, Ipecac and numerous singles and splits on other labels.

He collaborates in many different (not only musical ones) projects from jazz to improvisation, avant-garde and noise. He has shared the stage with many musicians including Thurston Moore, Jim O’ Rourke, Mats Gustafsson, Chris Corsano, Lukas Ligeti, Peter Brötzmann, Damo Suzuki and many more.

Tony Buck is regarded as one of Australia’s most creative and adventurous exports, with vast experience across the globe. As a drummer, percussionist, improviser, guitarist, video maker and producer, he has been involved in a highly diverse array of projects but is probably best known around the world as a member of the trio “The Necks”.

Following studies and early experience in Australia he spent time in Japan, where he formed “Peril” with Otomo Yoshihide and Kato Hideki before relocating to Europe in the mid-nineties.
Some of the more high profile projects he has been involved with include the band Kletka Red, and touring and recording with, among others, The EX, The Exiles, and Corchestra, and involvement with most of the international improvisation and new music community and festivals.

Mette Rasmussen is a danish saxophone player based in Trondheim, Norway. She works in the field of improvised music, drawing from a wide range of influences. She spans from free jazz to textural soundwork. She works on exploring the natural rawness of her instrument and dives into experimenting on what the saxophone is capable of in sound and expression, with and without preparations. She started off in free improvised music, in a quite early stage of her career. Working in the span between composition and free impro, with the danish band Saft.

The last couple of years we have seen her invarious groups,projects and ad hoc settings. Playing mainly around Europe and Scandinavia. She’s a member of the British band Trio Riot, a punk jazz trio who has been touring extensive playing the UK, with 5 tours in the past 2 years. She has collaborated with musicians such as Rudi Mahall, Alan Silva, Tobias Delius, Chris Corsano, Wilbert de Jode and Axel Dörner.

Andrea Belfi is a drummer, composer and experimental musician. Through the last twenty years he has developed a unique style of drumming, influenced by his many experiences with experimental and electronic music, rock, improv. His hypnotic rhythms and textures create immersive soundscapes for the listener to float in.

He has released five solo albums and more than fifty collaborative records on labels such as ROOM40, Miasmah, Häpna, Die Schachtel, Constellation, Blue Chopsticks. He has collaborated, among others, with Mike Watt, Carla Bozulich, David Grubbs, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Nils Frahm, Greg Haines, Circuit des Yeux, Andrea Parkins, Werner Dafeldecker, Rabih Beahini, Erik Skodvin, Aidan Baker, BjNilsen.
