The opening concert of the Kontraklang series in 2016 is entirely dedicated to collective artistic ideas. With the musical collectives UMLAUT and STOCK11, the organizers of the Kontraklang concert series have invited two of the most prolific and artistically unflinching groups of protagonists on the experimental music scene.
Blazanovic-Drefers, Engström and Williams aim to offer a forum for Berlin’s vibrant contemporary music scene. Yet to speak of just one scene would be an understatement. There is a multiplicity of entangled and internationally networked scenes active in Berlin. Illustrating this diversity and picking up on current trends is one of the main priorities of the three curators.
UMLAUT Berlin is a collective of highly individual musicians from around the world, all of whom are currently based in Berlin. With the stated aim of the “transformation of sound” the group has organized an annual festival for contemporary music since 2009. The collective also runs the record label UMLAUT Records and has held concerts at various Berlin cultural venues. Its five members collaborate with each other in ever-changing constellations. For Kontraklang, UMLAUT will realize their idea of a collective and social sound with all of its members present for the first time. The collective will combine composition with improvisational strategies.
UMLAUT will presents the following members: Florian Bergmann (bass clarinet), Pierre Borel (saxophone), Joel Grip (double bass), Hannes Lingens (percussion), Daichi Yoshikawa (feedback).
STOCK11 is a group of composers and interpretative and improvisational musicians of contemporary music, which has set itself the goal of cross-linking the various artists and art forms. They aim to preserve the singular artistic expressions of each individual while eliminating isolation. Members share the common wish to understand the art of the others and maintain absolute artistic openness: Jennifer Walshe (voice), Daniel Gloger (voice), Sebastian Berweck (piano, objects), Mark Kysela (saxophone, objects), the guest Roland Neffe (percussion, objects), Michael Maierhof (sound director), Maximilian Marcoll (sound director), Uwe Rasch (sound director).
