With an extensive program of concerts, discourses and an exhibition space, CTM.12 – Festival for Adventurous Music and Related Arts is appropriating the festival theme SPECTRAL to explore the current reemergence of all things ghostly and dark in experimental music, avant-pop, and art.

The thirteenth edition of the Festival will be held from 30 January to 5 February 2012. As always, CTM runs parallel to and in cooperation with Berlin’s festival for art and digital culture, transmediale, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2012.

In addition to a comprehensive music program at HAU, Berghain, Passionskirche, Gretchen, Kater Holzig and Horst Krzbrg, a discourse series developed in collaboration with the philosopher, psycho-historian and author Andreas L. Hofbauer will address the festival’s theme by pursuing questions concerning art, theory, and music.

Jana Winderen | Isolation/Measurement

A few of the many highlights are:
30 years of Touch: a birthday celebration of experimental music’s most forward-thinking imprint with Eleh, Jana Winderen, Hildur Gudnadottir (photo below), Charles Matthews, Marcus Davidson and The Eternal Chord.

A revisitation of the Zodiak Free Arts Lab with Works by Conrad Schnitzler, Wolfgang Seidel and his Free Arts Lab project, Qluster (Hans-Joachim Roedelius + Onnen Bock; photo below), Borngräber & Strüver and Köhn.

Nurturing open experimentation between music, art, and performance in the late 1960s, the Zodiak Free Arts Lab provided one of the crucial focal points for the musical awakening of artists and bands such as Kluster, Ash-Ra Temple, Tangerine Dream, Human Being, and more.

The multi-day program will begin by highlighting several of the Zodiak’s key figures and includes Wolfgang Seidel performing Conrad Schnitzler’s “Cassette Concert”, as well as Schnitzler’s rarely presented automated performance on disklavier, the “Piano Works”.

Later on in the week, other contemporary artists with a similar experimental rigour will transform the HAU 2 venue into a special listening environment: Grouper & Jefre Cantu Ledesma; Catherine Christer Hennix and the Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage, Pre-Cert Home Entertainment (photo below).

Also performing: Mouse on Mars, Mohn (Wolfgang Voigt aka GAS & Jörg Burger aka The Modernist), Ben Frost with Borgar Magnason and Shazad Ismaily, Sendai (Peter van Hoesen + Yves de Mey), Éliane Radigue, Balam Acab, Tim Hecker and many many more. Check out the whole program on the CTM2012 website.

Ever want to watch Alice Cooper host The Muppet Show or catch up on old episodes of HBO series Tales From the Crypt, but didn’t know where to find them?

Maybe you just want to zone out for a few hours watching nostalgic old black-and-white TV shows like The Twilight Zone or documentaries on big-wave surfing from the 1970s?

If any of this seems appealing to you, it might be worth checking out Network Awesome, a virtual TV station with four to six hours of old TV programming each day that’s nostalgic, entertaining, informative — and thrown together by a team of dedicated curators.

Pulgasari | Trailer

The site launched in early January 2011 as the brainchild of Berlin-based electronic musician Jason Forrest aka Donna Summer and his partner Greg Sadetsky, who does most of the coding for the site.

Since launch it has mostly relied on word-of-mouth to grow its daily viewer base, but viewers are catching on, with the site posting record traffic last Friday.

All the broadcasting is curated from YouTube. The Netwpork Awesome system stitches the various links together and presents it linearly to the viewer.N-A’s intent is to show something about TV culture as a whole.

This can manifest itself in a classic kids cartoon from the 30′s, an interview from the 60′s or a undiscovered movie from the 80′s. The main purpose of Network Awesome is to surface content that is otherwise difficult for nostalgic fans to find online.

Now, we want to celebrate NETWORK AWESOME’s first anniversary with an incredible party in the beautiful Sophiensaele in Berlin, with a “Greatest Hits” video screening, a Chuckamuck live performance and a DJ set by Monsieur Bonaparte.

We are happy to present: LAND OF THE SONGHAI, a film By Hisham Mayet (45 minutes, 2011). The screening is part of the ongoing Folk music series “When the Devil is Gone I Mostly Feel Lonely”.

Sublime Frequencies co-founder Hisham Mayet’s latest film explores the music and landscape of Songhai country in Western Niger.
Traveling down the Niger River, Mayet’s camera encounters Zarma mock possession hoedowns, Wodaabe trance vocal performances, spirit possession ceremonies, Godje one string laments,Contigi string masters, Comsaa griots and Sahel night markets, creating a dynamic and fascinating glimpse into this arid but culturally vibrant bend in the Niger river.

Land of the Songhai | Trailer

Simmering up from the rebel heart of the Tuareg guitar scene, the film will be followed by a concert of Group Inerane at the Festsaal Kreuzberg next door. The band is a rough-hewn, tranced-out psychedelic juggernaut careering off the path beaten to the West by their peers Tinariwen and Group Bombino, coursing along a thrillingly scuzzed-up parallel lineage to Link Wray, The Velvet Underground and even Creedence Clearwater Revival.
The Festival will show new works from Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, and the U.S. Asian diaspora that present a variety of notions of family and kinship.

In addition to the film screenings, the Festival presents a panel discussion (Oct. 29, 2011) with guests from Hong Kong in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and the Free University of Berlin (Chinese Studies). On the night of Oct. 29, 2011, a Festival party will take place at Club HBC with Asian DJs and other surprise guests.

Music as evocative as the stuff made by Com Truise – master of the transporting synth odyssey – necessitates videos that are nothing short of cinematic.

Hence the fully blown-out treatment for “Brokendate,” which rolls everything from eighties cop noir to Blade Runner retro-futurism to slo-mo Hype Williams nods into one five-minute world unto itself.

Com Truise is one of the many personas of producer and designer Seth Haley, born and raised in upstate New York and operating out of a 12’-overrun apartment in Princeton. An admitted synth obsessive, Com Truise is the maker of an experimental and bottom heavy style he calls “mid-fi synth-wave, slow-motion funk”.

Says previous collaborator and director Will Joines of 10 lb Pictures: “While I was cutting the ‘Fairlight’ video earlier in the year I kept thinking that it was fun, but if I ever had the opportunity to actually film something for one of Com Truise’s songs then I could really go all out and create this whole world that would be specifically tailored to his music.” Mission accomplished.

This saturday cineasts will be able to enjoy Ernst Lubitsch’s „Das Weib des Pharao“, originally colored. The world premiere of a restored version, made of the rolls of film rediscovered recently!

While famous Emil Jannings is playing the Pharao (!), the WDR Rundfunkorchester, directed by Frank Strobel, will be accompanying the silent movie live – the original score of Eduard Künnecke has been adapted for the orchestra.

For a long time the epic movie only was screened in black and white and lacked some crucial scenes. On the basis of atwo russian “Nitro-Copies” of the russian state archive the new version could be restored. Original colours, missing scenes and the live performance of a whole orchestra promise an impressive cinematic experience.

Das Weib des Pharao | Trailer

The Ethiopian King Samlak offers his daughter Makeda to the powerful Pharaoh Amenes in order to secure peace between the two countries. What was intended as a political move ends as a debacle. Instead of Makeda, Amenes chooses Samlak’s beautiful slave girl Theonis.

Nevertheless, Amenes can not secure the love of Theonis as she is in love with the young Egyptian Ramphis. Having suffered humiliation, the Ethiopians declare war on Egypt. Amenes is injured in a battle and perishes – but only seemingly. The happy union between Theonis and Ramphis is in peril when Pharaoh Amenes returns to claim his wife and his throne.

The sounds heard on the albums of AOQ come from a vast collection of antique synthesizers, Farfisas, Hammonds, home-organs, cheap portable keyboards and all sorts of malfunctioning machinery. AOQ use old discarded technology, home organs and cheap consumer cast-offs often salvaged from garbage dumps and then customized by the band for the rigors of live use.

Their passion for out-moded musical machines and ancient communication technologies is clearly reflected in their collaboration with TF3IRA, a trio of ham radio enthusiasts. This performance, documented on the Kitchen Motors CD “Motorlab 2″, featured an enormous electric sound sculpture involving shortwave receivers and morse code transmissions mixed in with the organ quartet’s ethereal soundscapes.

The band was originally conceived as part of a series of improvised concerts organized by Kitchen Motors, a record label and art collective founded by Jóhann Jóhannsson, Kristín Björk Kristjánsdóttir, and Hilmar Jensson.

Apparat Organ Quintet | Macht Parat Den Apparat

Apparat Organ Quartet is also part of a collective of Reykjavik-based musicians that includes members of Sigur Rós, Múm, Kanada, Trabant, Funerals, Slowblow and others. A number of these acts share members, and have collaborated on other projects.

Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 17th, 1972 was the last manned mission to the moon.

But a year later, in December of 1973, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. What you are about to see is the actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission. While NASA denies its authenticity, others say it’s the real reason we’ve never gone back to the moon.

Apollo 18 Trailer

The film’s premise is that the officially canceled Apollo 18 mission was actually launched in December 1974 but never returned, and as a result the United States has never launched another expedition to the Moon. The film is shot in a mockumentary found-footage style, supposedly of the lost footage of the Apollo 18 mission that was only recently discovered. The film is López-Gallego’s first English-language film.

After various release date changes, the film was released in the United States and Canada on September 2, 2011; however, the release dates for other territories vary.

Our favourite post-rock Band Tortoise have recorded the score for Lovely Molly, an upcoming movie directed by Eduardo Sánchez.
Eduardo Sánchez’s The Blair Witch Project (co-directed with Daniel Myrick) broke new ground in horror, and its influence is still prevalent today.

His new entry in spook cinema doesn’t play for shocks or gimmicks, as its strength lies in the intimacy of its portrayal of a woman’s disintegration in the face of an unrelenting evil. The quiet, raw power of Sánchez’s latest work is more akin to Polanski’s Repulsion than any of the Bible belt–endorsed possession films of recent years.

Newlyweds Molly (Gretchen Lodge) and Tim (Johnny Lewis) move into Molly’s deceased father’s house in the countryside. An ex-addict with a deeply troubled past, Molly is strong in her new life of recovery. Unexplained disturbances in the night unnerve the couple, and when her husband goes away for business, Molly is left in a house that holds many painful memories. Her isolation is soon shattered by a malicious presence that unleashes a physical and mental assault.

Tortoise | Gigantes

As she struggles to regain footing in her simple existence, Molly’s grip on reality begins to waver. Her erratic behaviour is a warning sign to her friends and family, whose interventions drive her further into solitary torment and spur a deep, dark infidelity within her.

When decorated soldier Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he’s part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train.

In an assignment unlike any he’s ever known, he learns he’s part of a government experiment called the Source Code, a program that enables him to cross over into another man’s identity in the last 8 minutes of his life.

Source Code by Duncan Jones Trailer

With a second, much larger target threatening to kill millions in downtown Chicago, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack.

The film had its world premiere on March 11, 2011 at SXSW and was released by Summit Entertainment on April 1, in North America and Europe. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright. Digital in Berlin highly Recommended!

Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest is a documentary film directed by Michael Rapaport about one of the most influential and groundbreaking musical groups in hip-hop history.

Having released five gold and platinum selling albums within eight years, A Tribe Called Quest has been one of the most commercially successful and artistically significant musical groups in recent history, and regarded as iconic pioneers of hip hop.

The band’s sudden break-up in 1998 shocked the industry and saddened the scores of fans, whose appetite for the group’s innovative musical stylings never seems to diminish.

A hard-core fan himself, Rapaport sets out on tour with A Tribe Called Quest in 2008, when they reunited to perform sold-out concerts across the country, almost ten years after the release of their last album, The Love Movement. As he travels with the band members (Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White), Rapaport captures the story of how tenuous their relationship has become; how their personal differences and unresolved conflicts continue to be a threat to their creative cohesion.

When mounting tensions erupt backstage during a show in San Francisco, we get a behind-the-scenes look at their journey and contributions as a band and what currently is at stake for these long-time friends and collaborators.

Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest | Movie Trailer HD

Rarely heard stories from New York’s legendary DJ Red Alert, Native Tongues members like Monie Love, the Jungle Brothers, Busta Rhymes, and De La Soul bring an intimacy to the days when young artists discovered the freedom of artistic expression, while rejecting the confines of gangster rap and negative stereotypes. Chronicles of songs like “Scenario” and “Check the Rhime” paint a vivid picture of growing up in Queens, and how the band’s unique approach to hip hop helped transform and influence the genre for years to come.

A New York native, Rapaport’s lifelong love for hip hop helps achieve intimate, all-access interviews and cinéma vérité-style filmmaking, fostering a conversation for A Tribe Called Quest to determine if there is a possibility to mend the wounds from over the years.

In addition to chronicling the past, present and uncertain future of the band, the film includes interviews from the Beastie Boys, Kanye West, Pharrell, Mos Def, Santigold, Monie Love, Pete Rock, Large Professor, De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers and Common, all of whom attribute some combination of love, respect, and inspiration drawn from the legacy of A Tribe Called Quest.

What is life without work, or work without heroes?! Shorts Attack in May presents 8 exceptional short films dedicated to unusual, anarchic and everyday aspects of working life.
Between welfare benefits, the global economy, and conveyer belts – success, it seems, is all just a question of strategy. Cheer on office hamsters, careerists, megalomaniacs and yuppies while they fight for survival in heroic, original and innovative ways. May the (work) force be with you!

Ever since March 2002 , interfilm Berlin has been presenting Shorts Attack! every month at Kino Babylon Berlin:Mitte. Shorts Attack! is as diverse and surprising as the short film medium itself, taking in foreign focuses, political, outrageous or seldom-seen films, film school projects, independent productions, fiction, or animation.

The driving force behind the Shorts Attack vision is the intention to further establish the presence of short film in the Berlin cinema scene. The program has been met with great response by audiences and media alike.
The film was a nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards, in 2010.

Malik El Djebena, nineteen years old, French of North African descent, is sentenced to six years in prison for attacking police officers. Alone and illiterate upon his arrival at the racially divided prison, he falls under the sway of Corsican mobsters, led by Cesar Luciani, who enforces a brutal rule.

Un prophète | Trailer

The Corsicans think little of the North Africans. However, Malik comes under their protection after he is forced to complete an assignment for them: the murder of Reyeb, a hostile witness in the next cell block. Although the victim haunts Malik for years afterward, Luciani offers Malik protection, and enlists him to make coffee and play cards with his gang.

When the bulk of the Corsicans are transferred or released, Luciani calls on Malik, who has secretly been studying Corsican, to be his eyes and ears in the prison, eventually arranging day-long furloughs for Malik that allow him to conduct Luciani’s business on the outside. A hostage swap, a casino negotiation – he becomes more reliable than even the gang’s longtime attorney.

Born in New York and now firmly based in Berlin the composer ARI BENJAMIN MEYERS shifts flexibly between the contexts of cultural production.
He works together with leading representatives of the arts scene like Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster or Anri Sala, and also collaborates with diverse representatives of the music world like Einstürzende Neubauten, Staatskapelle Berlin and Morton Subotnik.

On 2 April Meyers will perform his most ambitious work so far with the REDUX Orchestra that he had founded, a group of musicians, consisting of 17 members. ³Symphony X² is a declaration of love to neo minimal music, a style that came into being in the late 1970ies and early 1980ies at the American East Coast.

SYMPHONY X by Ari Benjamin Meyers Redux Orchestra

Produced by Ari Benjamin Meyers & Max Loderbauer, Live Video by Lillevan

Procedures influenced by composers such as Glenn Branca and Rhys Chatham meet elements from post punk and new music. The result is a radical formal language which Meyers describes as ³productive sabotage², concerning his work in general. Musical situations are exposed to a permanent web of construction and deconstruction, leading the audience¹s expectations astray.
