Berlin native and Jahcoozi’s beat mastermind Robot Koch has got another trick up his sleeve: this time with MC John Robinson.
Robot’s electronic splices meet the smoky, laid-back flows of the microphone don who made a name for himself as part of hip-hop group Scienz of Life a few years ago (at the time, none other than MF Doom supplied Robinson’s beats).

Koch can in no way be compared to the metal-faced rhymeslinger and producer, but definitely manages to hold his own.

The release is out on Project Mooncircle, also home to fLako and the mighty Graciela Maria.

Robot Koch And John Robinson “Robot Robinson” Album Snippet

The eight-track release has been described as “two dynamic forces coming together in parallel universes”.

The Robot Robinson album spells out the attempts to bring a different pitch of vocals to the world of Electronic Music. Robinson being no stranger to the scientifical lyrical approach along with Robot’s evolutionary voyage prone soundscapes, this one is a sure shot.

This year’s 60 participants brought diverse musical visions to London: providing panoramic windows into what’s going on in the 32 different countries they hail from. Similarly, the space in which they created was a window onto the host city. A place where walls reflected and bounced ideas rather than divided individuals.

Electronic avantgardist Markus Popp aka. Oval recently released the first new Oval material in over a decade in Oh on Thrill Jockey.

In the meantime, Oval has put together a Free EP, featuring non-album tracks from the O sessions. It’s called Ringtones, and you can download it right here from Thrill Jockey.

On September 7th, Thrill Jockey will release Oval’s new 70-track double-album, O. The album comes in 4 different covers, and Oval is slated to play some rare performances in support of the new record in Europe, Japan, and North America.

Oval | AH!

Popp, who lives and works in Berlin, took some time between his last release under the moniker SO and the “Oh” EP because he wanted the new material to be a radical departure from his old concepts and methods on all levels, to essentially be a second “debut” album. For “O” Popp’s creative process shares nothing with his creative process for prior Oval albums. Previously, Popp focused on the creation of the programs that would process sound and effectively create the music.

Oh is pressed on 150 gram white vinyl and housed in an LP jacket with a hand-glued photo art card on the front. The 12” is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide.

As a musician, Popp’s process was more theoretical in nature. Creating the platform and knowing what that platform could and should do to the sound sources. He selected the sound sources and then turned it over to the platform.

For ”O”, Popp uses an instrument that is very common, a stock PC outfitted with stock sounds and plugins. He no longer uses or creates a custom platform, but instead utilizes a readily available instrument. What he has done with this instrument highlights Popp’s, perhaps for the first time, musicianship.

Popp spent years woodshedding with his instrument and worked diligently to push the instrument beyond its normal sonic boundaries.

This time with American DJ & producer King Britt from Philadelphia & Rucyl and their new project aka Saturn Never Sleeps featuring a free download of her Berlin show at the Bergain Club last month.

Each artist is asked 11 set questions and to contribute 3 “facts” which can be any statement from them on absolutely anything: their own views on politics, religion, the environment, sport…or just something they read in the paper or saw on TV.

FACTS:

Rucyl’s FACT:

1: I’m working on building a Saturn Never Sleeps midi controller or function generator.
2: My biggest influences are early dancehall, lover’s rock, and Sun Ra’s film Space is the Place.
3: Saturn Never Sleeps is an interstellar journey to the unknown.

King’s FACT:

1: King James Britt is my real name. I hate when people call me Britt.
2: Saturn Never Sleeps is a project my fiance and I created. It is now my…whole life! It is why i am here on earth.
3: My parents are the reason I am a great producer.

QUESTIONS:

1. What is the biggest inspiration for your music?

King: Over the years it has changed. It used to be certain songs, then
certain album, producers but now its pure ‘sound’.

Sounds inspire everything now. Found Sounds especially. Sounds taken out
of context and given new meaning.

Rucyl: I’m inspired by the music of my immediate peers, by visual artists, and by human nature.

2. How and when did you get into making music?

King: 1984 I bought my first keyboard. I wanted to make music like
Kraftwerk, Vince Clark and Quincy Jones. My friend Dozia and I started
making things for fun. We were called the Red Team.

Rucyl: I left home at an early age and fell into music by accident, eventually joining The Goats, an alternative hip hop group, here in Philly. Oatie Kato, one of the rappers/producer of the band, was an engineer-turned-musician. He had the first early Apple computers and was using DAWs in his home studio, and I was paying attention. I started with a Tascam four track, then moved on to a Mac Power PC desktop and a demo copy of Protools, and have been expanding ever since.

3. What are your 5 favourite albums of all time?

King: Now you know this is one of the most impossible questions…but for
now its the following:

1.- Off The Wall- Michael Jackson
2.- Black Celebration- Depeche Mode
3.- Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack- Various
4.- Songs from the Big Chair- Tears for Fears
5.- Three Days of the Condor Soundtrack- Dave Grusin

Rucyl: Also an impossible question for me to answer! but these five are always in rotation:

1. The Secret Life of Plants – Stevie Wonder
2. John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman – John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman
3. Dexter Gordon - Round Midnight
4. Nina Simone - Ultimate Nina Simone (curated by Dianne Reeves)
5. Linda Perhacs – Parallelograms

4. What do you associate with Berlin?

King: Techno! My early days of coming to Germany were Love Parade and performing on floats and afterparties. From the early days of German techno
to now the amazing work of Jazzanova, Dixon, Henrik Swartz and Ame, who have taken that history and flipped it into new movements in sound.

Now Berlin is so worldwide, due to everyone moving there, that there are many hybrids being discovered and created……

I love Berlin. Visiting….

Rucyl: Berlin makes me think of art, minimalism, industrialism, musical freedom and German food. My mother is of German / Russian descent and fed us well yumm.

5. What’s your favourite place in your town?

King: Philadelphia is a great city. I have been here for 41yrs. There are many amazing places but I must say that HOME is the best. We have a beautiful place and I dont like to leave !!….hahahaha.

Rucyl: Home is definitely the best… and the parks.. We have beautiful parks and river access here in Philly and spending time in nature is my favorite refuge when everything else we do demands constant use of technology.

6. If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?

King: I would definitely be a film maker !
Rucyl: Visual artist or electronic engineer.

7. What was the last record you bought?

King: Low (remastered)- David Bowie (Berlin again…hahaha)

Rucyl: HTLV Ep by Sonnymoon

8. Who would you most like to collaborate with?

King: Anne Dudley! she is one of my favorite string arrangers andpianists. She is 1/3rd of Art of Noise and has produced and worked on countless records and soundtracks! TOP NOTCH! also, Claudia Bruchen from the band Propaganda in the 80s. Very distinctive voice !

Rucyl: Konono No. 1, Tinariwen, and Robin of Quadron

9. What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?

King: As a spectator I must go with Radiohead live at Tower Theatre in Philly. Holy sh*t. Mindblowing energy.

as a performer, the first Sylk130 show in Philadelphia at the TLA. It was the beginning of the neo soul movement in Philly before anyone
knew…amazing…so much love in the room.

Rucyl: When I was singing with the Goats, we played Germany in ’94, and the intensity of the crowd was unforgettable. Spectator wise, I recently saw Janelle Monae at a small venue here in Philly, and her execution and performance was incredibly inspiring.

10. How important is technology to your creative process?

King: It is very important. Technology allows me to bring my ideas to life so quickly now. Ableton has to be the best program on the planet for music.
It allows me to be a musician and not a programmer. Hahahaha…But ultimately it all starts with the idea. The brain is the most important, then sound…then the computer.

Rucyl: Technology is everything.. but if you don’t have a story to tell, it’s pointless. I use it for everything, but always with the understanding that it is a tool.

11. Do you have siblings and are they proud or jealous of you?

King: No siblings. There can be only one King Britt (my real name by the way).

Rucyl: 1 sister and 3 younger brothers. None of them understand what I do, but they love and support me 100%.

London producer Paul White has sifted through the back catalogue of a little known Scandinavian psych rock musician for his latest release.

‘Paul White and the Purple Brain’ will be released in June on the Stones Throw sister label ‘Now and Again‘ (the first single ‘Ancient Treasure’ can be downloaded here).

A collaboration of sorts, the entire record is based around and inspired by the work of little-known Swedish psych-rock guru S.T. Mikael. Heavy on Eastern influences and otherworldly concerns, Mikael’s music ranges from searing electric guitar-led dirges to dreamlike ballads to ghostly atmospheric experiments and has been issued in tiny quantities since the 1990s on the ‘Subliminal Sounds’ label.

Having been granted access to S.T. Mikael’s back catalogue, Paul White found a unique source of inspiration and challenged himself to create an album using the Swedish multi-instrumentalist’s work as the sole basis for his output. The result is Paul White & The Purple Brain.

The eclectic producer also performed at the first D/B Serious Beat Producers event in autumn last year.

11+3 is designed to give you an insight into the motivations and aspirations of the best creative minds in the world.
This time with London electronica producer and DJ James Fox who has released his first record on independent label TAKE Records. James has also done a special D/B guest mix, which you can listen to here.

Each artist is asked 11 set questions and to contribute 3 “facts” which can be any statement from them on absolutely anything: their own views on politics, religion, the environment, sport…or just something they read in the paper or saw on TV.

FACTS
1: I spend far, far too much money on new clothes and shoes
2: The first record I ever bought was ‘Pump Up The Jam’ by Technotronic
3: My favourite drink is a Jamaican Mule – dark rum, ginger beer and fresh lime with ice. Try it, it’s amazing.

QUESTIONS:

1. What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
Well, I get inspiration from all sorts of places – but the one that I like best is going to a nice venue with a good soundsystem, and hearing DJs play records that I want to dance to. Sometimes as a producer you can get too caught up with trying to make records for other producers and overthink things, so it’s always a good idea to go back to basics, as it were.

2. How and when did you get into making music?
I started to be a bit more focused on writing music maybe around four or five years ago; before then I’d messed around with things like Fruity Loops without ever really making anything worthwhile. I still see myself as being a DJ first and a producer second, but these days the two are so closely linked – you need to be releasing records often if you want to get decent DJ gigs…

3. What are your 5 favourite albums of all time?
Wow, that’s a hard question! I don’t know where to begin picking my favourite of all time, so maybe I’ll just pick a few favourites that I return to again and again…

Burial ‘Untrue’
Shed ‘Shedding The Past’
The Streets ‘Original Pirate Material’
The XX ‘XX’
Leftfield ‘Rhythm & Stealth’

4. What do you associate with Berlin?
Although it seems obvious, the main one that springs to mind is electronic music! I think Berlin (alongside London, of course) is really where the most forward thinking producers and DJs seem to congregate for some reason. bPitch Control, Dubplates&Mastering, Hardwax, Berghain / Panoramabar etc – these are names that are recognised as a seal of quality by electronic music fans all over the world, and that’s not even getting into individual producers or DJs.

On a more personal level, I visited the city for the first time last year, and I was struck by how calm and focused it feels compared to London. Just little things like people waiting at crossings until the green man appears, even if there is no traffic in sight! I also saw an awesome Abba cover band in a shopping mall at Potsdamer Platz.

5. What’s your favorite place in your town?
That depends – my favourite area is definitely the East End, more specifically places like Hackney, Dalston, Stoke Newington or Shoreditch. Living there it always felt like there was something to do, or somewhere to go; some parts of it are a little rough around the edges, but I think I prefer that to being bored living in the suburbs.

6. If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
If there was no music in the world, I would probably be a writer – or at least try to be! Once upon a time I wanted to be a journalist, but I soon had my enthusiasm crushed by a boring course at University.

7. What was the last record you bought?
If you mean vinyl record, the last one I bought was the new Seiji 12” ‘Elevator / Yes Man’. I think the last digital I bought was IKE ‘Lost4Trax’ EP on one of my favourite labels, Philpot.

8. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
People like Shed, Ramadanman, Instra:mental, Scuba – basically producers that are able to make deep, bass-driven music that you can listen to as well as rock a club with.

9. What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
Probably at a night called Slacker’s Convention in Brighton a few years ago; there was a festival in the town the same day that finished around 11pm, so the club was absolutely packed full of people that were, how to put this, already ‘refreshed’ and ready to dance as soon as the doors opened. I came on at 3am in the back room, and it was one of those sets where the energy levels are peaking and everything just flows. I finished on Goldie ‘Inner City Life’ and the whole room sang it back to me… amazing.

10. How important is technology to your creative process?
Perhaps not quite as important as it is to some; most of my tracks are made using a lot of samples, so I guess I could probably get by using an old Akai and some outboard! As it is, I run a battered old PC and use a bare minimum of plugins, mostly the Sonnox suite and a couple of others. I have a Nord Rack that I love – it makes the most amazing sounds that just fill up the mix. I’d be lying if I said that I don’t want to get a Mac, though.

11. Do you have siblings and are they proud or jealous of you?
I am an only child; my family and girlfriend are really proud of me though.

Thanks and love to Martin and all at D/B, TAKE Records, my girlfriend P, all London / Manchester / Bristol heads and everyone who has bought my music or listened to one of my mixes.
