D/B Recommended: Berlin Festival @ Templehof Berlin | Friday & Saturday, 9-10.9.2011

One event to make good use of the former Templehof Airport, Berlin Festival again boasts an impressive lineup this time.  The many highlights include a live performance by Glaswegian legends of post-rock Mogwai, whose new album Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will, came out earlier in the year.

[audio:Mogwai – Rano Pano.mp3]The programme also includes such attractions as early Warp act LFO, Apparat, Public Enemy, Battles, Jimmy Edgar, Mount Kimbie and many many more.

With Mark Bell a.k.a. LFO, we have a true Warp icon among the Berlin Festival line-up. When Mark Bell and Gez Varley, the second half of LFO back then, released their debut Frequencies in 1991, the two Sheffield boys broke through the techno barrier – the revolution of the electro genre achieved with their first album only.

No one’s messing with Mount Kimbie when it comes to dubstep. About three years ago, the London boys, Kai Campos and Dominic Maker, appeared on the scene and caused a stir with their EP Maybes. In 2010, the duo released its debut debut, Crooks & Lovers, a 33-minute-long fireworks of hectic synth loops, clicking beats and sinister soundscapes.

Battles love to experiment. In 2007, the New York-based band released its debut album, mirrored, a conglomerate of dissonances, countless changes in tempo, vocals changed out of recognition, and plenty of rock’n’roll madness. In June, Battles are about to release their second album, Gloss Drop.
